I know we'll never get an accurate count after 70 years of shoddy record keeping, but I currently own 10 and have been through about 20, and compared to many of you I have a small collection. So I'm guessing that the number is at least 4 figures.

Definitely four figures...probably at least 3,000!

A very good question. There has to be fewer gigging bassists than basses since most own at least two. Maybe around the 400-500 mark?
C’mon, this is TB, I wouldn’t be shocked to find out there is at least one member who has 4 figures of basses.
Although wouldn’t 4 figures top out at 9,999? Gotta think there is at least an order of magnitude more than that in existence. Somewhere between 100K and 1 million more likely.

I'd have to think thousands upon thousands exist in every state.
Thousands upon thousands in Japan.
England, etc, etc, etc.

There’s approximately 315,140 members on talkbass, we are considered a niche community. Most bass players I talk to in the real world have never heard of it! So I’m going to say there are probably 15 million bass players in the world and probably 500 million basses! They have been cranking them out for a long time year after year at this point!
I don't how many, I only know that too few of them are in my possession.
All I know for sure is that I'm misunderestimating.
My gut says that are millions of electric basses in the wild blue whirled.

WADR Jimmy... and your interest in knowing that number? A better question might be how many songs are based on the same notes. (oh, wait a minute... I guess that's a given...) Seriously ... (conservatively) about one fifth of the number of electric guitars. That's my answer and I'm sticking with it.
This is just a guess: 50-110,000,000. Thousands and thousands of cheapos have been made, and I have never been to a country where there are no bass guitars. I am not the widest traveler at 11 countries, but that includes poor developing nations, the first world, and countries where tourism and entertainment are important to the national economy.
