How many envelope filters is enough?

Just ordered my first, they just got it back in stock, and i paid for the overnight shipping, i cant wait. Ordered the Aguilar FILTER TWIN. After watching some videos i am sure i will be satisfied. I am not into too many different sounds so i doubt i will have too many filter pedals.

I think that's all of them but I might be missing one or two. Right now the only one on my board (and the only one I still own) is the IE Xerograph Deluxe.

A lot of great filters. I wish more of them would do a separate input jack so that the envelope was still triggered by your playing dynamics regardless of what else is in the chain.

The Chunk 00Funk does it with the Brown Dog and it is fantastic but the setup has some limitations (only works with the Brown Dog, can't use the filter separately when connected this way etc) and I know Mario at Robot Factory set up a separate signal splitter box and trigger input for Proton Lenny's custom Photron filter.

The Groove Regulator actually does this the best with the separate Effects loop where the pedals in the loop are still available to use when the GR is off and set to buffered bypass. Great job by Spencer on that design.

hahhaha! i just had a thread about choosing between EHX bassballs and mxr envelope filter --- I ended up buying both ---

i actually just bought the mxr bef online because it was onsale for $100, then there's this guy in the office who sold his ehx bass balls for only $20 -- how the hell can i say no to that????

I only got into envelope filters about a year and a half ago and was overwhelmed with the choices out there since I wasn't really sure what I wanted other than new sounds to explore. I was familiar with them on recordings but just not knowledgeable as to what whoever was using. I tried a lot of the more commonly suggested pedals and would check out videos to get an idea of their sounds before going to test them out. There were others I liked but were so far out of my price range (a matter of opinion at that time), for example any Moog pedal, I didn't bother even touching one.
Oftentimes, starting out, I couldn't seem to get really decent sounds out of pedals I liked from suggestions or match what I heard on videos, which I take full credit for not having any experience prior using a filter pedal.
After more research I came across Marcus Miller using the EBS TRIPLE IQ and loved it. Again, at the time, the price was ridiculous to me as I never thought I'd pay that much for a pedal (I no longer feel this way) but I was in the midst of my first GAS attack with some disposable income to which I also was unaccustomed.
Since then, I still love the EBS TRIPLE IQ and I've gone back to try many different pedals with a better understanding yet still yielding so many undesired or uninspired results.
Finally, I picked up a long desired but hard to find Korg Toneworks ax3000b and with this one processor I've found so many incredible envelope sounds I feel satiated for the time being. I even put the EBS on the guitar pedal board as I no longer use it for bass. I do run a Line 6 M13 in the loop of the Korg which yields some additional interesting sounds, but I don't find it necessary in terms of envelope filters used, just a plus and wouldn't use it for envelopes by itself. I completely understand the notion of a bass player never having enough or at least multiple e filters, but I'm happy to say I'm good for now. Too much GAS in other areas always.

The BassBalls is such a distinctive voice IMO that it's in a league of its own. Especially if you open 'er up and play a bit (carefully!) with the internal trim pots.

I just put my toe in the water with my first one: the MXR M82.

When I began my research into the subject, I quickly identified this unit as the front runner. But then when I started hearing the things you can get out of a Source Audio BEF Pro... I lost my mind thinking of all the great electronic/synthy sounds I could start getting.

Then reality set in. I didn't really like the standard, funk BEF sounds coming out of that unit. Plus the controls seemed wacky: too few knobs for too many functions. Then there was the price...

So in the end I ordered the MXR. Just arrived this morning. Gotta dig out my velcro and get this puppy attached to the board...

I have the original MuTron III (I won't gig with it, and the power supply needs repair- I think the whole thing needs to be tuned/reset to default values); Haz MuTron III+, EHX QTron +, and just got an FX 25 (but I haven't found it useful for anything except the dub low-pass use). I want to get a GR2 and IE Xerograph Deluxe, and wouldn't mind demoing the SA BEF and/or BEF Pro.

I've been digging the QTron +'s effect's loop, but missing the effects I put in there, so reading this:

Makes me want a GR2 now, as in immediately. Just sell the QTron+ and trade up. Or keep the QTron+... because you can't have too many EFs.

I found this thread while I was rummaging around the Interwebs for info on the Robotalk 2. I've had up to 9 at once, but I currently just own four. The Robo2 will make filter #22, just holding off until Premier Bass opens near Boulder, CO later this month. I want to see what nifty toys they'll have! :bassist::bassist::bassist:
