Just open it outdoors so you can enjoy it immediately

If the bass came to you via ground transport, it has already had a few days en route to come up to your local outside temperature gradually. If the difference between your local outside temperature and the temperature in your home is going to cause damage, how will you ever take the bass out to gigs?

In a heated / cooled car so the instrument doesn't reach outside ambient temperature. Instrument goes in first but the case stays closed for "a while". Oh, and I don't have nitro finishes on my instruments so I guess that helps.

If inside / outside temps are significantly different I'd wait. Not sure I'd make it 24 hours however.

Look at the tracking. If it has been in the Phoenix warehouse for a while or maybe it even went through El Paso, it has already acclimated.

It totally depends. If it's comfortable outside, then I'll go ahead and open it. If it's blazing hot or freezing outside, I'll give it several hours to adjust.

during wintertime, in the midwest: we enter bar venues very slowly...like a snail...just so our axes have time to acclimate when we load in.

who would even play an instrument that may have been unboxed prematurely, or otherwise inappropriately acclimated?

Never seen that notice.
Never ordered a Nitro coated finished bass from a hot temperature into a cold.

I buy oil finished natural basses.
And I always unbox them immediately.

I will wait a few hours if I am bringing a nitro bass inside from the Montreal winter cold. I rarely wait long if it is a poly or oil finish.
If I am flying in for a gig it is often airport to soundcheck. Not alot of time for waiting. I dont fly with my nitro basses though.

Meanwhile Musician's Friend will bug you that you with texts telling the bass has arrived and itching for you to tell them how it was plus a sales guy calling you and asking how was the bass within a couple of hours after delivery. True story.

Definitely in Winter. Any other time not so much.

This is the way I see it. Anytime I order a Bass, it sits bouncing around on a UPS or FedEx truck all day in the usually hot and humid gulf coast climate. My driver always delivers in the afternoon or evening so I know for a fact the instrument has been sitting semi exposed all day on the truck to whatever the weather is that given day. Keep in mind this is just the last leg of it's whole journey.

I have a personal resentment towards nitro finishes so I never order them unless it's something that has no other finish options and I really want it.

For me, I never wait. If the finish is going to get messed up, it's going to get messed up in the cross country transport through multiple different climates and environments all the way to the delivery driver just driving rough on a really cold and dry day or hot and 100% humidity given on the time of year. If a poly finish is that weak I'm willing to bet something was wrong with it in the first place honestly.

I do not. Do we think these things sit in a nice toasty cargo hold when being flown or trucked to someone's next date? Open the box and play.

I don't really get this - is it just when the bass is new and the finish is "fresh", or whatever the proper expression is? Or is this something you guys in cold climates have to be aware of when you take a bass out on a freezing cold day - eg only open the case once your in the venue/let the temperature even out if you're doing a super cold outdoor gig?

With my climate I'm just curious really, mine are rarely outside in under 0C/32F. It's the 40C+/105F+ that worry me…
