It depends. If it's in our grossly hot summers here, and it's coming off of an unconditioned delivery truck to my air-conditioned house, I'll wait a bit.

Now, in a couple weeks, when my custom Dingwall arrives, at long last, even with it NOT summertime, I'm waiting. I've already waited 16 months, another day won't kill me.

Is it open yet?

My new Bass just completed the journey from Indiana to Arizona over the last several days, so I'll bide my time until tomorrow until I open my early Christmas present to myself.

I just removed the inner box containing my Bass from the outer shipping box, and immediately noticed the warning to both Dealer and User printed on it. At least they are consistent!

I bought this bass brand new, didn't wait and when I opened the case it burst into flames!

Bass plays and sounds great though. My house burned down but it was worth it.

This is a liability thing. In the event something were to "go wrong" with the finish they can say, "well, we told you so!"

In reality, the "wait 24 hours to open" has no basis in fact.

Most instruments prefer the cold anyway. ...

Nah. Most instruments are poly finished these days, so I don't worry about. I just spent $3,200 on a new Dingwall and I opened it the instant it showed up at my door (-15c outside). If it was an old or vintage collector piece finished in nitro, that's a different story. But think of all the bands that tour in the winter, gear in a cold trailer then Show up just in time for sound check and just grab and go. So I guess all depends on the situation.

I appreciate all of the comments posted in answer to my query, it certainly helped pass the time until my new Bass was released from it's holding cell.

It was absolutely worth the wait, and in perfect tune, to boot! The picture definitely doesn't do it justice...

I remember a guy on another forum that kept ordering nitro finished guitars, then complaining that they cracked and sending them back.

When this myth started the wait time was one hour. In 24 hours the temp inside a box will be the same as the outside air. If we need 24 hours we are saying basses can not take any difference in temp, none at all. Not even a few degrees.

Common sense is generally the inverse of science.

I do my own setups, so no I don't wait.

If it's a nitro finish I do. If not I don't. I don't wait to open a case for a gig when it's been in a traitor hours on end. Same logic.

In my case, I'm now happy that I did wait the 24 hours, because when I bought my beautiful new Bass over to my Luthier yesterday afternoon, it took less than a minute for him to identify the twisted neck.
