How many here can still play a CD?

Do you own a CD player?

Yep! This is one of the CD racks in my place. I also have at least 20 discs in my auto also in the car. I know it’s easier to just hook up the IPhone in the car, but I still like them. Still buy them too. Usually at garage or estate sales as long as they’re in good shape.

I voted yes. It’s factual but not accurate.

About 8+ years ago I had no way to play a CD or DVD. When I upgraded NI Komplete, instead of an installer, they sent me 10 DVDs. I was so annoyed. I had to go out and buy a cheap external DVD drive for the install. I also took the opportunity to transfer all our DVDs to a hard drive and toss those. (I had already imported all my CDs to my HDD about 2007.)

If I absolutely had to play a CD, I could dig around my drawer of outdated computer stuff and probably find the DVD drive. I should still have it, if it survived getting culled in all my moves. But i would be incredibly aggravated that I had to use a CD, and if it wasn’t for something absolutely necessary, I wouldn’t do it.

I absolutely wouldn’t buy a CD and haven’t since I imported them all to my computer in 2007.

I've been having some discussions about recording for the purposes of providing merchandise. Five out of five bandmates, when asked, said they have no way to listen to a CD. My sense is maybe that's true for most of us.

My husband still has a CD slot in his car, but that's the only way I'd be able to listen if I really wanted to.

How about you? Would you be able to listen to a CD if you bought it from a band you liked? Or would it just be a mercy-purchase for support, that you'd never be able to hear (I do lots of those).

Physical formats only seem to be important to the artist: its a tangible item that you can put your hands on and gives off a certain power of artistic immortality. "I did this!", especially when seeing your name on it. Home builders do the same thing when going through some neighborhoods. In 2023, the only physical format worth putting out is vinyl, as it is still enjoying a healthy trendy resurgence for those folks that want to have the full album 'experience' of music with associated cover artwork and photos, as well as the vinyl sound qualities....I do think CDs will eventually come back around but they havent done so yet

Home and Car, both used regularly.

(which means I didn't vote, sorry)
Just to clarify, you can vote home. This is really to capture people who either can, or cannot, comfortably sit at home and hear music from a CD. I put the car option in because I knew someone would say that's all they had, but the real purpose of the question is "can you listen to a CD in the comfort of your home?"

The point being to figure out how many people would even have a chance at buying a CD at a merch table if one was available.

TB skews older, so these results so far aren't terribly surprising.

One thing I'm wondering about, too. Most of the people I encounter in music are about a decade younger than I am, so that may skew things. They're also the ones telling me that their CDs don't sell at shows.

Our older folks still may have the things they've always used, whereas younger folks may be less inclined to do components in favor of streaming. But who knows? It's an interesting question.

Yeah. A lot of younger folks want the downloads. The trend is to have everything on the computer, smartphone, laptop, iPad probably because it's easier to handle versus a lot of discs. Doesn't take up any space and easier to access. Not to sidetrack the thread, but this mindset includes photos, financial, medical records, etc. No more paper either.

I just received my two Jazz Sabbath CDs in the mail from the Netherlands. I play CDs on my home stereo and my computer (used to be able to do so in my car until I got a new one recently).

I still have a nice CD player in my home theater setup. I occasionally bust out a CD from my collection of hundreds and spin it, since it does sound good.

There are CD players in both of my cars, which are 2016 models. My wife’s is a 2022 and does not have one.

A couple weeks ago I took about 1500 unsold CDs from an old originals band to an electronics recycling center and let them go.

This system should work...until the aliens come with their electromagnetic rayguns to destroy everything in the Cloud.

My ‘19 car does not have a cd player. My wife’s ‘13 car does. We’ve got a cd player in my ‘08 MacPro (yeah lol) and cds play in our PlayStation and Xbox’s. We’ve got close to 500.

That being said, neither of us have purchased a cd (other than Dream Theater albums) in over a decade.

This is what I would like to do. Just need to get the converter to do it with. None of our computers has a slot for a CD anymore.
I got something very much like this. I didn't set up anything elaborate, and I used Windows Media Player to do the ripping. Once I got it working the way I wanted, it was just a matter of putting the CD's in the drive. I also let WMP go online to find the track names and cover art, which I had slight misgivings about because of my privacy, but decided I'm unlikely to get arrested for the music that I listen to.
