How many here use HipShot D-Tuners?

Have you thought about getting one? And if so why haven't you?

I find it very usefull, i use it for heavier tunes or when i need to hit a low D. I have it on my Yamaha Attitude, and if i buy a new bass, a hipshot will be mounted on that too

Every bass I ever owned has had a Hipshot installed by me. I find them extremely useful - to the point where I hate playing without them.

There's just one song I play where I need the bottom D. I have thought about getting a D-tuner just for that, but haven't got round to it yet.

I have now - just ordered a gold BT2 for my graphite neck Jazz.

Didn't love using one in the past, but I'm a little more 'saavy' with set-ups, etc now. Here's to giving it another shot!

I had one on an American Deluxe Jazz for a long time. I thought the E string felt different as well. However, my brain knows that there shouldn't be any reason for this- not as long as the de-tuner isn't 'slipping'. So, I'm going to try it out again (albeit on a different bass) and see if I still feel the same way...

Not sure what would feel different between tuning down to a D and flicking the level and right away you E string is a D string. It's the same string tuned down so what could feel different?
When installing and tuning with the hipshot you have to follow the instructions. When you do it that way you'll have no problems with them.

I've got one on Old Faithful, my late 70s Precision. A friend of mine put it on for me in the 80s. I like it for the last note of a song in D.

I never play a whole song with the E dropped to D. Too confusing to have a different interval there.

I don't use a Hipshot D-tuner because I favor Sperzel machine heads and Hipshot doesn't have a model to fit them.
However, I have a detuning Steinberger bridge and I use it very often. Most of the time it is set to C.

You should try playing whole songs with it detuned. You'd be surprised how quick it'll come to you once you commit to it.

Well, I mostly play my 5-string Jazz these days... no need to detune!

been using them on every 4 string I've owned since 1987. They are GREAT, but imperfect; You have to rather accept that sometimes, it doesn't tune down perfectly (if the string hangs up on the nut) so it's always good to check your tuning going up or down... Mid-song changes are, in my opinion, not a great idea unless you have your bass *dialed in*....

You can use some powdered graphite to solve that problem.

$45!?

I paid $85 for my 3/8" chrome clover key Ultralite.
I just checked BestBassGear, and all the other detuners seem to be similarly priced.

Where are you getting detuners for $45?

Hipshot on my P gets used for, approx, four songs per night. Yep, I'm very happy with it.

I've often thought about having one of these on at least one of my bases BUT:
- I've never even seen one and don't know how they work. And I have the impression that it is some kind of lever you need to operate with your thumb, and IF SO then it's out for me cuz my thumb joints are pretty well destroyed by arthritis - there is no cartilage left in either one.

Am I right or wrong about these?

I don't know about a NEW Hipshot Extender (Drop-D tuner) for $45 . . . but I HAVE gotten new ones, directly from Hipshot Products, for about $55, including shipping. The trick is that you have to ask for the discount, ordering 3 or more parts at a time . . . It's worked FOR ME . . . . . .
