Generally speaking, How many winds around the tuning post?

As many as you can fit on there neatly. You'll get more on the smaller gauge strings. More winds means more stability (if they are round wound). The grooves link together.

I agree with 3--except for the A string on basses with Fender style headstocks. For those, I typically do not cut the string and wind it all the way down the post to increase break angle of the A string.

I totally disagree! 2-3 windings is the best!

3-5. There should be enough to take the pressure off the bend coming out of the tuner, but not enough to start winding back on itself. A rule of thumb I use is that I cut the string a little more than 2 tuners past the one I am stringing.

That is what I shoot for.

Make sure you wrap them all in-line.
