I always talk about any idea's of buying another bass with my partner. Not because I'm seeking permission but because she is really interested in what i'm doing musically, what instruments i'm playing and enjoys helping me come to the right decision. She also knows it takes me a lot of considered thought for me to justify a new bass to myself so I'm more likely to say no to most things I consider buying.

This method is tight, check this out... so you bought it for $500 CAD, on kijiji right now there's a used one for almost $300, therefore it only cost you $200 because you have the option to flip it and sell it if you ever choose to haha, good luck

I've done it, but only serves to show you're dishonest in her eyes when you're inevitably caught - the difference between real and "acceptable" price is far less than what that will cost you... edit: and don't forget to get her something soon with some of your money

LOL! Yes, Twain had a few other things to say about truth. This one is a favorite:

"Truth is the most valuable thing we have. Let us economize it."

Just tell her what you really paid for it. If you do not take money out of the family budget for gear you shouldn't have to worry about it or justify your spending decisions. If you do, just man up and make it right one way or another.

I avoid this dilemma by never spending more on equipment or instruments than the extra money I make from playing music. The total value of instruments and gear I currently own is about 1/5 of the money I've made playing music over the years.
