Somewhere around $300 for a Dean Edge 4, circa 2001. That got me started, but didn't stick around long and was traded in on a '95 Belair Green ASAT bass as soon as I could accumulate the difference in price. Thus started my long-lasting love affair with G&L basses.

Around 250 bucks used. Nineteen years ago. That was an asian "maison" brand, active. Knd of "bass collection " copy.
Mine was a Asian instrument too: a Lazer P-bass copy, in lake placid blue and white pickguard... I paid $200.00 new!!! Was the cheaper bass in the store...
In 1987 I bought mid 80's Peavey Foundation with a case for $75. My brother let me use a TNT 100 that he had. The first amp I bought was in 1988, Marshall 400W head, a 2X15 and 1X18 cabs. I got it new for $800.
Man, I gigged for years all over a multi-state region with an old Peavey TNT 150. Can't remember how much I paid for it or even what happened to it. I traded or sold it, but don't know what for or when.
Not the best sounding piece of kit for sure, but reliable as all get out and built like a tank (weighed about as much as a tank too.)
Whatever became of it, I have no doubts that it is still cookin' away out there somewhere. I don't think you can kill those things.

Indeed. After the Apocalypse, all that will be left to remind future explorers of this time in the planet's history will be roaches, Keith Richards and these old Peaveys.
1986 (or so) Ibanez Studio Bass. One of those Alembic looking active ones. It was very nice but heavy. Also in the deal, I got a 75w Fender Bassman 4 x 10 combo. Used it all for a few years. $375.00 for the bass & amp. Bought the pair in '89-90.
In 1965, I dragged Dad down to a pawn shop on So. State St. in Chicago - they wouldn't sell to minors. We picked up a Kingston P-bass (sort of) in a cardboard case and a little open-backed Kay amp, 15 wwatts and a 15" Jensen speaker, $64 for both - toted them home on the el train. That's how it all got started.
First bass was a Cort P bass given by my uncle back in 2006. My parents were way too poor to support my music hobby. We visited my uncle'who let me play with his instruments. He heard me playing Muse and Avenged Sevenfold basslines, decided that it was kinda impressive for a 13-year old, and gave me the bass for free. The Cort P would cost me around $150 now, and I still have it. I'm currently playing a G&L.
My first bass (and amp) cost me $300. In 1985 I joined a punk band. We went to Apex music store in Sandy Eggo (still there BTW) and walked up to a salesman and said "I have $300. I need a bass and an amp. What can you do for me?". Thank gawd the salesman was good 'cause he sold me a used 1984' Squier Precision (black on black w/rosewood fretboard) and a used Randal RB-60 amp.
