How much do you fiddle with your bass's EQ?

i try to find a proper eq for my amp that sounds good on any of my fenders and Rickenbacker.

i set my SVT to a nice sweet spot with my bass wide open. if needed, i pull my bass tone pot(s) back to soften/deepen it up a bit to go between rock, blues, funk, etc.
i rarely use a single pickup(as applicable), or adjust pickup volumes. once my amp's set i dont move it. my SVT's eq hasn't changed save for the volume knob in like 6 months. it'll change a bit, primarily bass tone (pot and switch) when i retire my vintage 810 and throw two 810AV's in, then one last time a few months down the road when the cabinets break in proper.

my rig needs to sound how i primarily want, but also enjoyable to others. from there i can hear it just fine on stage, get plenty of sound pressure, and use a DI box to run to a House PA at the larger venues. Smaller clubs the PA is just mains and monitors, nothing gets DI'd or Mic'd

I play passive P-Basses, so there's only the tone control to deal with on-the-fly.

I'll set my P-Bass tone mid-way first, then EQ the rig for the room.

Depending on the song and the stage mix, I'll tweak the tone control as needed.

ive got 2 sounds.. grind and washed out bass. all in my tone knob. otherwise, the EQ set on my amp stays put.

occasionally, i have to fiddle with the master bass knob because the stage turns into a giant cab and its making mud.

I feel that its all in the fingers - how you hit the string, where you hit the string (nearer the neck or the bridge) and what with - finger picking, slap and pull, or a plectrum. I have a P-J setup with 3 volume controls - master and one for each pup. With this setup I can go from smooth jazz (more P, play nearer the neck) to slap funk (more J) via Chris Squire (all J and beat the cr*p out of it with a plectrum by the bridge - maybe even a ten pence piece!!) without touching the EQ on the amp at all.

Find a bass that you absolutely love, find a bass rig you absolutely love, try and go for one with just volume treble mid bass, and gain , get a sound then turn up for load or down for quiet, now hears the secret, play play some more play play play and keep playing . In my opinion eQ is a bit of a myth, the more you practice the better you become and the better your tone will get,

I adjusted my on-board eq on pretty much every song we did to try and fit the song better. I sound check with the on-board flat, and make any tweaks at the head. After sound check, I tweak on my on-board.

On my active bass, I fiddle fiddle fiddle, all the time, adjusting for the song or just my mood.

On passive basses I just leave it set where it is.

I use my amp EQ for tone shaping, and it stays pretty constant because I know what kind of sound I'm after - cut high mids, boost low mids, bass stays 'natural' and flat, sometimes I'll boost treble. Passive Precision bass, tone and volume dimed.

I use my bass EQ to set the the tune. I rarely change it, but sometimes I'll add some mid or favor the rear pup for special tunes. Usually it's set it and forget it.

I use my amp EQ for the room.

I don't have a pedal EQ.
