How much experience do you have...?

How much experience do you have with ALL TUBE (no emulations, no hybrids) amps?

Also not to mention with all of the talk of tube amp reliability flying around, that's something that's more likely to come into play over the course of hundreds of gigs, not dozens. I can do hundreds of gigs on one set of tubes, so if answering hundreds is iffy for you, then you don't know what you're talking about in terms of reliability.

I've repaired thousands of tube amps. Your attitude is showing. ;)

For many, many "retro" gigs over the decades I've used a 1968-9 (has the aluminum surround around the grill cloth) Fender Bassman-Export (with switchable mains voltage). The same model that Macca used on the roof top in the Let It Be sessions. Great head. Doesn't get loud, but gets tone!

I have played one gig on a tube amp, maybe two. And part of one practice on a tube amp. All where provided as backlines. All of my rigs are SS, and most backlines are SS, so I don't play tubes much.

Used to practice bass through a guitar tube amp.... but I wouldn't have gigged with it.

Has anyone ever told you you kind of look like Billy Connolly?

Nope, I'd never heard of him before I Googled either. ;)

So how many people on TB do you think meet your criteria, out of curiosity? The market for new tube amps is well south of ten percent of sales by units AFAIK?

I just posted this thread because I was curious. I'm not trying to gauge the value of anyone's commentary, and this thread wasn't posted to garner any commentary.

Seriously if I wanted to judge other bass players I'd just ask for soundclips! (I know you're a great player Charlie) but some of us aren't and if I were to gauge the value of anyone's commentary that'd be the basis I'd do it on.

Going back to 1969, I used a VOX tube amp for practice and gigs, maybe 50 until fall of 1971.

Since then I have played through a Traynor Bassmaster, again practice and gigs. Not a powerful amp but it held its own in trio and quintet situations. Don't know how many gigs but it was roughly 15 years with that amp. Quit playing professionally after that.

Still have the Traynor for practice and recently began really getting back into it. I do have a smaller ss for practice in the apartment but not for gigs.

Will be looking for a new rig in the near future so I am very interested in the results of your survey.
