How much is too much for you?

Most I've ever spent is around $1,500, but I could imagine going up to $2,000, maybe even $2,500, if something really blew me away and I were playing out often enough to justify (rationalize) it.

My most pricey bass is my USA Glaub--but, I got it used. There's not too many basses out there over that price range that I think I'd have to have. I can afford to buy a vintage 60's Fender P, ya know, "the one" if I found it, but I dunno if I would pull the trigger or not frankly. I'd rather have two other, very different sounding cheaper basses. I'd get more outta that scenario.

One day I spent $3,500 in a beatiful Dingwal Super J, I sold it few weeks later because I was not satisfied with the sound, my DJ5 that costed me less than half that price delivers tone in spades

I absolutely LOVE my DJ5. What a great bass!

Probably $2000-2500. I would have to REALLY want it and REALLY be blown away by it though. I have owned a few basses in the $1300-1700 range. They have all been sold. My main three basses cost me $500, $250 and $150. Two of those I would take over any Fender at any price point.

as a hobby player, jamming every Fri night at a friends basement studio with the occasional open mike night for fun, the $280 CDN I paid for this used 2004 MIM Jazz seems like a a good place to start... I challenge you to find a better bang for the buck IMHO

Ask and ye shall receive. $150 USD MIA P bass gold. 1988 and 1990 Peavey Furies. I paid $100 for the black one and $150 for the white. Both play and sound better than 90% of the basses I've laid hands on at any price, including FCS, Sadowsky etc...

Honestly, I'd rather find a cheap bass that plays good and swap pickups/bridge and spend 2-2.5k on a killer amp. That's just me though. My amp and cabinet (ideal) budget are tenfold that of my bass budget.

imo,.. the greatest pbass is made by the Fender Custom Shop. i know it sounds juvenile, but in 40yrs every great pbass i got to play was always a FCS for some reason. the PINO, the DUSTY HILL, the 59 SERIES, the MASTER BUILT's just crush everything, imo.
so i would gladly pay $2250.00 for a used CS pbass before trying to save money. hell,.. i'd jump up and down if i could find a Pino or DH for $3250.00,.. used. those other pbass models leave me wanting more.

They had a new CS Dusty Hill Precision at the Guitar Center in Encino, CA for $2999 last I was there two weeks ago. I plugged it in the TB Dusty Hill thread hoping someone intetested would see it. Still a lot of dough, but 2 grand off list. It was marked "blow out." Black finish.

For me, $1,000.00 would be a bitter pill to swallow. Not impossible, but the instrument better be danged fine. That keeps me looking into either mid level / low end instruments and / or used. And I am fine with that.

Oxygen thins out very quickly for me after $1,999. Actually, I'm way more comfortable with a $1,499 ceiling.

Recently I bought a G&L L1k. I desired one of those for a long time and I spent 800€ on it. If cash don't matter I'd have spent more but of course it does. I'm still very much into Ricks, but they are 2k new, so it's far away. I'd rather get one custom built by a German luthier called Oliver Lang, he does so wonderful necks on his basses and he's such a fine guy - if I'll be cute enough I'd spare for one of those basses that will be about 2.5 k€. But that's the absolute exception and would be the ultimate bass for me. I'm seriously considering this.

The most I've ever paid for a bass is $1500. I'm very happy with it though. So I'd say I would probably cap it off around that.

I dropped a little over 3k for my Warwick Thumb and it was worth the money but my favorite bass is my 93 Jazz Bass Plus that I paid around $700 for I'm looking to buy my last bass a Ric and it could be a 4000 so I'm going to budget at least 2k. I'm really glad Sir Paul didn't play an Alembic.

1k really for me, or cash plus a trade. I can't see dropping more than that unless it was for something REALLY special. This 1899.99 for a new jazz bass stiff just isn't happening. I just can't justify the spend.

I spent 2000 on a black Tobias 4 string back in 93. Was in a metal band at the time and pretty much trashed a very fine sleek instrument....buckle rash, rusted screws and hardware from sweat and humidity. Vowed I would never spend that much again. Think my cap now would be around 1200 but luckily just got my holy grail..TUNE TWB6 for 379...so that's my new cap...

Depends on a few things.

I'd say about $2500. but, currently loving an Epiphone Thunderbird that I modified with a fretless neck, and now finding the hardware a little cheesy but still ain't going to have to spend that much to correct it. Likely will have less than $500.00 into it including strings and a new case.

Oddly, normally a guitarist. The bass player I've been blessed with for years showed up one day, years back in the mid-90's with a custom made Alembic, she had paid over $10K for this.

Eventually left it for me to try for a weekend. While I thought the amount was a lot more than I would pay mainly as I didn't think I'd notice the difference in price from something considerably less.

Weekend came and went, played phenomenal. All I know.......felt it was worth $7500. figured if I played more or possibly better I'd understand what I was missing and pay the rest, plus the specs would be mine not hers.

Years later, she bought another one, somewhat similar but nicer and more bucks......thinking maybe she should design my next purchase.

I get along with Fenders for playability. I have come to prefer newer ones. I gig almost every weekend with few exceptions and I need reliable gear and having good tone & vibe matter too BUT; that tone doesn't always come through live. In this case, my Precision or my slightly more expensive Dimension get me what I & the band's sound needs, a solid bass tone and to be consistent, a smooth playable bass. Adding another $2-3k to the cost of an instrument won't really matter to the audience.

Money has much to do with this, and long (long) term, American made Fenders do have pretty good resale so, I look for a good one in that price range.

Plus, I just like the Fender tone & feel.

Right now it is about 2500$ CAD which is close to 1700$ USD. I wanted to buy a EBMM and they quite increased in price with our crappy exchange rate.
