How my bass got famous for one night

I lent my 65 jazz to Leon Russel's bass player once when they were playing at the Buffalo Rose in Golden Co. I had to work another show in Denver that night and had one of my employees running sound at the Buff. At the end of the night I call and ask how everything went. He says fine and I ask him to grab my bass for me. He calls me back and says he can't find it. I panic and get in my truck and haul ass to Golden. When I get there, sure enough it is missing. I start knocking on the door of the tour bus and they open it. And I am like, "where is my effing bass". Tour manager says "oh we thought we could just borrow it for a few more nights". N o and give it back right now! They go get it and don't even say thanks or jack. Last time I lend a bass to anyone.

That’s effed up!!

Is this the outfit he had on? You are brave to trust the paint on the back of your bass to that - haha! Glad it worked out so well!

Exactly it is! Their band name should have ringed a few bells! I really don't know how his own bass survives to the next show. But it's thrash metal. You have to thrash something, right? :) And believe me, that strap is the longest I've ever seen.

Sweet story. I wish crap like that happened every day. Kinda silly that the bassist in question didn’t carry a backup, but at least he was appreciative of your saving his bacon.

I got one.

2002. We’re rolling up to the venue in Grand Rapids MI, midway through our tour with GWAR and Soilent Green. Shortly upon arriving, we are horrified to learn that Soilent Green had had a horrible wreck passing through Chicago, with two injured; Ben, the singer, got the worst of it, having his legs mangled to the point of being confined to a wheelchair for about six months, then graduating to a cane for a while. He’s thankfully all healed up now and about to play Bogota at Best Lines you've heard onstage? (Knotfest Columbia) with his other band Goatwhore (Soilent is currently on hiatus), but they obviously had to drop off our tour at the time.

After spending a long time being highly bummed out and worried about the guys (Ben spent about sixteen hours in surgery having his legs put back together), we and the GWAR guys did a head shed to hash out the practical matter of what we were going to do to fill out the bill on such short notice. I tentatively floated the idea of having Dave Brockie Experience (a side project involving three of the GWAR guys which I mentioned here (Best Lines you've heard onstage?) open the show, thinking it would get shot down. Instead, Brockie took the idea and ran with it, quickly throwing together details. Mike (“Balsac” Derks) would play his guitars through his GWAR rig, Brad (“Jizmak” Roberts) would play our drummer’s kit, and Brockie would play my bass through my gear.

Long story short, the show went on, all the bands had their A-game on, and Brockie took a really bad situation and turned it into a positive which was memorable for all of us. Best of all, I managed to get a pic for posterity:
