That actually works, did it for a long time when I was broke. Denatured alcohol is easier and faster though.
Don't stretch your strings like that though. If you wind them right you only need to tune them 2-3x after playing for a bit and they should stay in tune until the environment changes.
Picking up the bass by the string and shaking the hell out of it, could that damage the nut? Crack it or break it completely?

The nut, the neck, the bridge, the tuners.
It just seems like a bad idea overall.
