How Obese is Your Country?

Yeah, I mean I could do with some toning up a bit but I wouldnt consider myself on the verge of being overweight. And I coulnt imgine myself being 140 lbs.
I was 165 about 5 years ago. Various women all told me I looked better after putting on a few pounds.

"Toning" really means losing excess weight...the muscle doesn't "show" because it's underneath fat. Although 220 is not very big, if you went from 165 to 220, only a portion of that would have been muscle. It takes a massive amount of work to gain 55 pounds of muscle.

You may have crossed some of my posts with anothers... Im only at 177-180.
And Im aware of what I meant when I said I need to tone up. :)

^That's a super cool link; I'm going to send it around a bit!

I used to question the BMI, then I realized it was just my justification for all the pudge sitting on top of my muscles. No one other than a super-roid body builder or pro athlete needs to make it into the obese range just because they're muscular and no one is going to look weird, gross, or less buff if they're muscular and drop enough pounds of fat to reach the "normal" zone.

I'm still fat muscular BTW, I just don't try to justify it as healthy or attractive anymore.

I was honestly surprised to see who made the top few.

I figured us to be a lock on number one, but you and Mexico don't seem to have a lot of commonalities -- different genetic background, different language, different economic background, different hemisphere, etc.
HFCS has no friends.

We have a lot of Polynesians. They seem to be gifted at packing on poundage.

Since I cut back on the brewskis a month ago I have dropped 4lb without changing anything else. Alcohol interferes with fat metabolism causing you to store it.

Yep, I was thinking, in response to Unrepresented, that a lot of it in NZ is to do with our ethnic make-up. There are some correlations between Mexico and NZ. Both contain peoples that are relatively recently exposed to the Western diet in general, let alone the fast food diet.

The entire world is relatively recently exposed to the modern Western diet. Only a few generations ago sugar and white flour were luxury items. Only gentry suffered from "consumption", yada yada.

huh... i thought Australia would be second. Cool. I guess...
Was surprised Oz wasn't up there.
People seemed to be getting more conscious about eating more healthily which is great, but the amount of fast-food places at the side of Queensland roads is astonishing and reminds me if North Carolina. Luckily the weather encourages outdoor activity though.

I was vegetarian for over a year, hardly lost any weight and didn't _feel_ healthier, but later dropped anything that wasn't "real food", especially commercial bread, dairy, high starchy carbs, went back onto meat and quickly felt much better.

Are some of the posters denying there is an obesity epidemic in the US? Every time I go to the states, I can't help but notice the wide bodies. I find it shocking. It's really noticeable to me.
Having been a regular visitor to the US for years I've noticed an increase in obesity/anorexia polarization. The size of some Americans really hit home when I saw a woman in jeans with 3 back pockets, her jeans were that wide! And huge numbers cannot fly, they simply are two wide to fit into the seats. Thankfully there are ground-roots movements for real food, bread, dairy, beer etc, there's hope yet, despite the power of the industrial food businesses.

Mexico was exposed to the Western diet about 500 years ago. :smug:

Yup. BMI is horribly inaccurate. All gym rats are overweight according to BMI, or anyone with some muscle mass. It should be measured by body fat percentage and muscle weight.

I really thought this for years, then I met a handful or lifting enthusiasts who were within their proper BMI range and realized we could all be like them and wouldn't look the least bit bad if we just cut our calorie intake.

We're just so used to the fat that we assume a muscular and fat person is a straight-up muscular person. Most muscle-building gym rats still have more fat than they need sitting on top of that muscle and don't realize it because all of the non-muscular people around them are overweight already.

Yeah, I edited my post. 'Horribly inaccurate' was exaggerated a little. It's still inaccurate, and has been in my case for several years. According to my BMI, I am "overweight", but my physicals/blood work always notes that my body fat percentage, muscle mass, bone density and cholesterol are are spot on.
