How Obese is Your Country?

Yeah, I edited my post. 'Horribly inaccurate' was exaggerated a little. It's still inaccurate, and has been in my case for several years. According to my BMI, I am "overweight", but my physicals/blood work always notes that my body fat percentage, muscle mass, bone density and cholesterol are are spot on.

I guess it comes down to what you define overweight or obese to be defined as.

I might be getting a bit over-the-top too. The BMI's conception of "overweight" can certainly apply to athletic people in the way you describe. I'm mainly reacting to the athletic guys who say they'd look like bean poles if they met BMI suggestions for "normal" weight and those that imply you'd automatically be in the "obese" category if you were enthusiastic about weight lifting.

It's an issue I like to explore because I've always been both overweight and a "fast-twitch" bulky kind of athlete. My opinion on how much the two overlap has shifted a lot over the years and I like to bounce that off of other thoughtful people.

One can have great fitness, ultra-low body fat percentage... and still be overweight.

Think of an overloaded bridge... it doesn't matter WHAT the load is (fat or muscle), overloading is detrimental to certain body systems.

That analogy isn't good. You suppose there's a "generic amount of mass" associated to an overload. But a bridge built with 2' wide metal beams will hold way more mass than one with 6" wide wooden beams (ceteris paribus).
 
5'6" ideal weight is 143lbs.. when i weighed 180 i had muscle definition. I needed to lose 37 more lbs? no thank you.

This. I weighed 155 last year and my doctor said I was overweight according to the BMI. However, he knew I played rugby so he brought out the body fat clamps and did it that way; wouldn't ya know it, I'm perfectly healthy.

If you don't exercise then BMI is a good indicator. Of course, if you don't exercise you shouldn't need a number to tell you you need to start. Just my 2c

Group A (500 clones) has a BMI of 20.
Group B (500 clones) has a BMI of 30.

Do you think there will be a statistically significant difference in health outcomes and life spans between the two groups?


If yes, which groups will have better health outcomes and lifespan?

You're changing your approach in this post. My first retort was basically just to say muscle weight =/= fat weight.
