How reliable are money orders?

Retired USPS employee here. No cash in the mail, unless you send it Registered (NOT Certified). Bad idea regardless.

One other tip: wait until afternoon to cash money orders. Retail clerks start their day with a minimal amount of cash, and need to build up some cash from transactions before they have enough $$ on hand to cover money orders being cashed. The Post Office is not a bank.
