How should we handle this situation involving pay?

Point taken. But to level with you guys, I don't think myself or any other member of this band would want to get rid of him. While there definitely are other players who are at least as good as him, if not better, he does bring a solid musical dynamic to our band that is unique.

In addition, myself and the frontman have known the guy for 8 years now, so getting rid of him and replacing him over a (hopefully) one time thing seems a bit over drastic. And when it really comes down to it, he's a killer player, super reliable (besides this one incident), and a really nice guy too. We could find someone else, but there's no guarantee that they'd be as talented, reliable, nice, or even as into this band as our current guy is.

It actually turned out really well! We played most our originals during the first set while he was there, and for our second set we only did covers. Me and the other guitarist have a lot of material between us because we use to be in another band together, and we also are pretty decent improvisationalists so we were able to kill time and still keep the crowd entertained and happy.

And speak of the devil, the guitarist who split early for the game just called me asked me to be a sub bassist for his hip hop group, so hopefully I'll start making a little money there as well :)

OP... not that you need me to tell you this, but be careful about some of the advice here on TB.

GREAT people, and tooootally well-meaning, but imho, too quick to advise dumping someone or walking.

You did the right thing, played it cool, he came around, and it worked out even better than you expected.

Had I posted some of the stuff I had to go through with a member of the band I’m in (dang, I’d be embarrassed to post what I put up with), I’d have definitely gotten the “walk” advice, in fact it was so bad I’ve have given someone else the same advice, but I stuck it out, and I’m glad I did.

In fact there’s some more band drama (does it really ever end?) with the same cat and another member right now, and I expect that tomorrow night might be veeeery interesting… but I’m not going to do anything drastic, and things will probably work out.

Great job keeping the peace. A band can the the strangest relationship dynamic sometimes and it's hard to get the right answer from any of us looking from the outside in.

Sounds like you did the right thing on all accounts.

I agree. I had no desire to drop him. In fact, he's probably the most business-savy member of the band next to me (not to brag). Losing him would of been a big loss for a number of reasons.

Well done.

As for being quick to recommend dumping a band member....I'll fire you if you 'rage quit' or even worse - don't show up for a gig. You better be strapped to a ventilator if you miss a gig and want to stay in my band....

You know what I mean....somebody gets fed up with a discussion and stomps off saying they quit. But they didn't "Mean It"....well too bad. You said you quit and that ain't funny.

We can't have any doubt that our band can perform the shows we're committed to. We always have replacements lined up - even for me.

No. Life isn't an online game.
In RL, most "rage quitters" have no intention of quitting and are "quitting" to force you to give in. Once you do, they are happy again.

This behaviour MUST NOT be enabled. The only possible outcomes are an increase in outburts/threats, a decrease in the quality of issues being quit over, and the ever inherent risk of both mutiny or other members picking up/using the same habits/tactics if perceived to work.
