If the two single coils were not opposite wound from each other, the result would be the equivalent of a noisy Jazz bass….

But, if the two single coil pickups were reverse wound from each other, and you put the two pickups in series, the result would be the equivalent of……a Pbass (with the two pickup halves separated a couple inches and wide enough to pickup all strings).

The possibilities are “limitedless”……

Two pickups listening to each string at different points gives you comb filtering that is VERY different than what you get from a split P (which listens to each string at only one point). They won't sound at all alike.

My Jazz with the pickups in series sounds very similar to my PBass with the Jazz having very slightly less high end. They sound even more alike if both basses have flat wound strings on them.

it looks like its been done?

I'd go one step further and suggest a PP (both P's being single coil)!

Now we're talking!

I built this one earlier this year. Slab body as is my wont :)

Dual poles per string of a jazz single coil easy span the wider string spacing at the bridge but they don't have the same attack as a 51 single coil. I like 51 single coils so had a pair made ;)

Single coil at the neck is the standard 54mm pole to pole, ALNICO 5 wound to 8.5k OHM.
At the bridge pole to pole is 58mm, again ALNICO 5 but reading 9.5k OHM; it's also RWRP for hum cancelling.

Still WIP.

Stock Fender scratchplate is off  Need to cut one that fits correctly  Thinking a mini switch pickup selector might better than the V/V/T set up it has now.

It looks great! I look forward to a report when it's done. What's the story of wee Jimmy no-pick-ups on the left? Under the scratchplate? Piezo, maybe? :cautious:

Very cool! I had thought about the spacing being an issue for a singlecoil P in the bridge. Who did you use for the pickups?

The Jazz will always have a scoop in the low mids that the P won't. Yes, putting two J pickups in series will make the high mid peaks more similar, so that may be what your ears are keying on. Of course, putting flats on them kills a lot of the harmonics (where the scoop is), so it'll make them sound more similar. I have a bass that has a mode with the "J's in series" sound, and the mids are very different than a P using rounds.

You may not hear the same things I do, and that's OK.
