How to avoid G.A.S?

When it gets to where you have so much, you can never use it all.
Too many axes, I know people w so many axes they’ll never be able to play them all and enjoy them. At that point, I think you’re just collecting art.

Omg, I have the worst G.A.S, lol. How do I avoid it? I really love all the gear I am playing through. I just had bought a new bass last year (Mex Fender PJ bass-4 string) and one gifted to me this past summer (5 string American P-Bass). My amp head is only about 2 years old and my speaker cabs aren't that bad either. Although my 4x10 is alittle heavy. Money isn't an issue, so that's part of the problem. I just can't help it. I need help! lmao. I go on here and guitar center, and craigslist everyday. hahahaha, any advise to avoid getting it? I don't want to purchase anything new for this entire year if possible just because I feel like it is a vicious cycle. Is there like GAS Anonymous group? Any advise would be greatly appreciated

Fortunately my bass is not wear the gas is...I've been looking at new cabs and heads
Talk about easy-to-beat GAS. I have one amp I drag to gigs. It’s a combo 15”. It’s honestly as much as our sound guy wants me to bring, and that he prefers I stay turned down.

Nobody wants you turning up to gigs/rehearsals will enough amplification to play the Collosuem. You’re buying amps you’re going to have leave home anyway. That’s not GAS, It’s buying stuff that you can’t even properly use and don’t need. Go shopping for lawn mowers or table saws or something useful.

Dealing with mine was easy. I was hired on to a local music store chain at 17 where I had first dibs at basses coming in from the factory or in on trade-ins. (I also cleaned the store and maintained/setup the inventory that I didnt purchase. Also did sales and worked on customers gear.)

After going to college for electronics, I started working in the repair shop which allowed me to get first dibs on equipment that was taken in on trade at a low cost due to some sort of damage. I was also able to modify my own gear with confidence. (And I worked on some customer units here and there)

Worked great, but my GAS list is still pretty long...

I think the only cure for GAS is either financial issues, or a wife angry about all the basses in the house.

My Advice is don’t worry yet. You don’t have that much gear. And you don’t love the gear you have. There is not a problem until you have over 10 basses. I have 40.

You are seriously unAmerican if you dont buy stuff. Infact seriously antiEarth. Modern Money Theory, which is regarded as the most sound theory on how the economy works states that low tax and spending will lead to a slight inflationary economy which is about as healthy as the country could be. If you can believe it, surplus of money is what causes depression! Hoarding capital is bad for everyone. Having a controlled deficit is good.

Spending is exactly what keeps our economy going. To not buy is the worst thing you could ever do to your country and the world. By buying you are literally making sure that our next generation will prosper. There is progress in buying. New ideas come up and technology is updated from stiff competiton to out sell the competitor.

Do you want the future generation to die out? Didn't think so. GAS is good. Embrace it.

Just don't buy it on extreme credit. No selling organs, kids, using kids college money, etc. Because that's the reason why our economy is so corrupted.

Also one final thought. P bass is a P bass. There is no merit in buying something that is already perfecdted. It does not contribute to new ideas or new tech. So avoid like the plague.

If you buy everything, you won't have GAS.:D
No--you would have worse GAS--it's just how it works.

You can't avoid GAS once you become a bassist (Or guitarist)
But you can learn how to deal with it--and if you do--please let us know.

(Actually I handle it okay--I don't overspend--but I have learned to be content with what I have & et still be open to new stuff)

Not if there is nothing else to buy.

I guess if you can GAS over nothing. Usually you need something to cause the GAS. At least that is how it works for me.
You can GAS over something in your imagination--or getting a second one of something you have--or a variation of it--so it doesn't necessarily need to exist--GAS is all encompassing of reality & imagination.

I think it comes from, the Twilight Zone.

To avoid GAS, I do the following mind exercise:
I recall that gig I visited once. The bassist there had a Squier P bass, a 112 combo amp and an octave pedal.
His gear was well below $1000 new.
He was a studied musician and he and his tone totally kicked lower backside.

Then I proceed to steer my mind along the following path:
1. All my gear already is either top notch or at least very high quality.
2. Exercising my ability to play will have a bigger impact on my tone than upgrading any piece of gear.
3. When I upgrade part X of my gear to part Y, who, apart from me, will notice (using ears only)?
