How To Discover New Music?

Some I had heard of, like Camel...just checked them out recently.

Thanks for the suggestions man, Im finding quite a bit of amusement from the fact you think were from the same era...Im not even half your age:laugh:. Just happens to be the kinda music i grew up on thanks to my father.:thumbsup:

+1 for Bandcamp. I trawl Bandcamp all the time.

Oddly enough, I actually caught wind of some new (to me) music through trawling around on the GHS strings and ESP guitars sites. (And I would later try to find them on Bandcamp if possible.)

Through the GHS site, I discovered:
-Peter Douskalis (really cool Cypriot music) Peter Douskalis - Psintri Vasilikia Mou Feslikan,
-Sety0ursails (post-hardcore band) SETYØURSAILS - You Make Me Sick,
-Vanille (French acoustic-folk) Vanille - Amazona
In general: Videos - GHS Strings

Through the ESP site, I discovered:
-Beige Interior (a trip-hop, downtempo band) Beige Interior: "Sanity" (Live),
-Paladin (metal band, think Hammerfall meets Skeletonwitch) PALADIN - AWAKENING (GUITAR PLAYTHROUGH)
In general: ESP Videos - The ESP Guitar Company

EMG-TV (the YouTube channel for EMG pickups) is where I discovered the insane talents of Nili Brosh.

This one I found because it took place at a recording studio/rehearsal space/showcase room I was interested in using. This is a local NJ band called Silent Culture, and I love their use of spacey sounds with catchy lines

I get new music inspiration watching TV series and movies. Sometimes it's hard to determine what was playing because their credits at the end aren't always helpful. Nine out of 10 times I can figure out what song was playing.

I discovered Stephen Marley while watching Luke Cage on Netflix, so I bought a whole album of his. Didn't regret it one bit.

Radio is my source for new music, although I never "go looking." KEXP, KCRW, WFUV, and to a lesser extent WXPN.

I mainly listen to jazz so I'm on WBGO a lot and they're always spinning what's new.

I prefer radio to the streaming services because it's what I grew up with. I still appreciate hearing an on-air personality giving a back story or personal reflection on what s/he's spinning. Just feels more organic and warm to me.

Also my sons (19 + 21) turn me on to what they're enjoying.

That's exactly how I learned of Blackberry Smoke - they had a track play on Sons of Anarchy back in 2012. I figured out what the track was (thanks internet), then bought their LPs. Have bought every album since and seen them live twice! Even had a beer and a chat with Paul in Utica NY.

That doesn't happen very often for me - to dive so deep on an impulse like that!

I must admit my musical composition efforts are HIGHLY influenced by Top Gear backing music (UK edition, Clarkson, Hammond and May era).

I'm a huge fan of Sirius XM. I originally got it free but now pay subscription. All these other suggestions are for free resources, why do i pay?

I play in a traditional country music band, and channels such as Willie's Roadhouse, Outlaw Country, and Bluegrass channel havevturned me on to tons of new (to me) music. The latter two play new stuff in the genre also. Another favorite of mine is the classic "Real Jazz" station.

In addition to no commercials, access anywhere from my phone app, interesting radio personalities, curated selections, there are FANTASTIC shows put on air by my favorite artists:

-Christian McBride has a weekly show on the jazz station with guests that is not to be missed.

-Steve Earle, Shooter Jennings, Buddy Miller and Jim Lauderbach show with guests are like having my older brothers clue me in to all the stuff that is really happening now. Plus interesting stories and digging into what was behind the scenes in their careers.

Other live concerts I would not have access to from NYC, Nashville, Austin, Outlaw Country cruise and more.

If the multitude of classic rock stations are programmed anywhere near as well as the old school country stations, it would be well worth the subscription IMO. I have been inspired daily by these channels.

Look up covers... Usually generates some different results.

you have to get creative with your search parameters … add and subtract words …
