How To Discover New Music?

So quarantine is taking a toll on me, I am stuck at home and bored senseless. Ive been trying to find new music by my usual method, going on youtube, looking up a song I already like, and then just clicking on whatever looks interesting on the sidebar and seeing where it takes me, only theres a problem. Youtube has been giving me the exact same suggestions on the sidebar, no matter what I click on, Essentially I cant find new music because YT is choosing not to give it to me. Does anyone have any other ways to find new, interesting music?

Go to Pandora, make a station by entering some artists you like, then select "discovery" when your station begins playing. Despite having hundreds of artists in my collection, I found half a dozen I had either never heard of or had never listened to within the first 8 hours.

Next time I buy some music, I will definitely make a deeper dive into these new artists and decide whether to buy them or not.

That happens to me at times. Make sure you go to settings and clear search and watch history and then search for a few different things and it will help diversify the suggestions. That is unless what you're always listening to is all very similar in genre or whatever. Also some other great recourses in this thread.

so what tunes are you starting with? probably get some good suggestions here. BUT, try punching a fave into pandora and see where it goes, use the thumbs up/down to help it learn. also, hang around music people with great taste

Look up names of artists that are unfamiliar to you.

Psychedelic Rock, Classic Rock(Zeppelin, Creedence, Sabbath) ,Doom Metal, Stoner Metal, Space Rock, Delta Blues, Chicago Blues, Funk, Southern Rock, Prog Rock(King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Yes). Stuff Like that

If you participate in the facebook community, I recommend checking out More Fuzz. It's right up your alley with the stoner/doom/psychedelic stuff.

Pandora, Spotify, iCloud Music, internet radio and there are many other online resources besides YouTube. Try those. One of my favorites is Amazon Prime. You get a lot of benefits for a monthly fee such as free music, videos, original series, movies, free express Amazon shipping and more. Most services will start to recognize your style of music and will then recommend other songs that may or may not match your taste. The downside is that you typically have to pay a monthly fee. Sirius and XM radio have a decent selection although, not really worth the price they charge. Also, try listening to Classic songs and or bands. You'll be surprised.

There was a period of time when I discovered a treasure trove of new music and that was the days of pirated internet music sharing programs. Napster is probably the most famous but there were others. It was considered stealing music and it was. But the ironic thing is that I would discover new music and then go out and buy more CD's and Albums than I ever did before. If there was a newly discovered song or band that I liked I would buy their album so that I could have a better sound quality product.

The sound quality of MP3 music sucked back then as it still does today. CD, SACD or Vinyl are much much better. It was the record industry's antiquated business practice and resistance to adapt to modern technology that caused the crash of the music industry and while Napster was illegal it was their scapegoat. The music industry took advantage of artists and eventually broke themselves and refused to take responsibility for their own crash.

Napster was a good venue to discover new music risk-free. I would then spend money on better quality media for music that I liked.

If you want to find things that are sonically similar to what you like, an option would be Music-Map - The Tourist Map of Music. I haven't had the best luck with it because my tastes are eclectic but I've heard good things. In regard to what the OP likes, maybe you'll like Man Man. Personal favourite albums are On Oni Pond (Here's a song from it), and Rabbit Habits (Here's a song from that one). Rabbit Habits is the more "out there" album in regard to the two.

Check out Nic Harcourt. He's been a stunning source of interesting and distinctive music. He introduced me to the Ditty Bops, a truly strange duo with uber-fun lyrics and impressive musicianship. My wife wonders what I like about them!
