How To Discover New Music?

Log out of Google.
Clear your browser cache.

Use youtube again without logging in. This will reset your searches.

Also search for artists you don't like nor care for. See what pops up and go from there.

I use YouTube a lot to discover new music, I search players or groups I know or heard of. Check out their stuff and use the suggestion feature or let the autoplay do it's thing. If I hear something new I like I search that person or group.
I also check out a lot of the music referred to from this site.
I have just over 25 years of bass player magazine and check out the music that reviewed and the players featured in articles and ads. Same with the massive amount of guitar mags.

Take longfinger's advice. YT is notorious for showing both same-old-same-old and general crap. Even Pandora does better than YT.

OP, what are you after? More bands that play stuff similar to your current faves? Or are you trying to spreading out to genres you aren't conversant with? The list you gave in post #7 should keep you very busy.

Plug for a local radio 3PBS in Melbourne Australia. They have shows dedicated to pretty much any genre,
DJs are invariably record collectors and absolute nuts for their own genre and will turn you onto the lesser known stuff.
For stoner and prog check out a show called Pojama People. Follow the links to stream the latest show and if you like it there's huge archives of older shows.

I think we are from the same era (I'm 62).
Stumbled onto this guy's Channel during shutdown...many late '60s/'70s bands I had never heard of. So, not "new" as in current...maybe new to you? Have you heard of a band named Weed? :)


Some I had heard of, like Camel...just checked them out recently.

I think he has Parts 2 & 3, too.

I found them all by finding one......reading articles (case in point the oh sees record label was the first to release gizzard in the us), and using Spotify to see related artists. Then I buy the ones i Like on Bandcamp. I Love Pysc rock! KEXP has tons of great live sets.

You won't find all of those genres represented, but as something of a Luddite who hasn't quite yet entered the 21st century, I credit NPR with enlightening me quite a bit about "what's new" out there. Their music curators all appear to be about half my age, so they find stuff that would never, ever come across my radar screen otherwise. Plus, their "Tiny Desk" concerts are quite entertaining to watch.
