Here's just one example from Ray Brown on Kadota's Blues:

This is a pretty straight up blues progression and I've pointed out the first time the root note is hit for each change. In measure 7 he never even hits a root. Depending on the changes, where I've been and where I'm going, I'll sprinkle this kind of stuff throughout a tune all the time.
