I hate it when things strike that close to home. I joke with folks I play with, “ don’t let me get bored, I get into trouble then.” Probably good that I don’t have this guys chops…

I'm not a great bass player, but because I've always played with only one guitarist (I refuse to be in a band with two electric guitars), I do play more notes, I may modify the original bass line to be more melodic, and I make sure my tone is such that my notes are very clear and discernable...

but I always respect the integrity of the bass line, never noodle or do fancy riffs unless it's part of the original.

Long ago I was asked by the guitarist to be busier so he wasn't "left hanging", from which I learned.

Needless to say, old country bass lines were not played exactly like the original.

Yes on this, some bass players forget that their responsibility is ROOT FIRST. and dont overplay. He sounds like a guitar center show off,,,,
