Active pickups are not the same as adding a pre-amp....this thread http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f38/replace-passive-pickups-active-emgs-1005388/ got a little hairy and scary but once I went into the physics behind the electronics a few lights came on. Basically passive create current from the string movement, true active pickups are loaded with a small amount of current and the circuitry is sensing the fluctuation in current. Not the same thing which is why they are close but still apple vs pear. PAssives with a pre-amp won't sound like actives.
