How to play the same fret on a different string?

As with all fingering challenges it will depend on what preceeds and what follows. But your options are barre or adjacent fingers:

I started playing at 57 years old 3 years ago and used tab extensively. However,.....when I was able to leave the numbers behind I finally had the freedom to feel like I was playing the instrument. Learning the notes, the intervals (1-3-5, etc.) shapes, patterns, etc were key. I remember having an ah-ha moment when I figured out the 12th fret is like another nut and everything above there (towards the bridge) is the same as the first 9 frets of the neck (20 fret bass). And then how magical was that sound of plucking the 5 and then the 1 and letting them ring together. Lord that was nice! First finger on the second fret and bar the F# and B with the pinky (4 and 4) for me.

This works for most people. Lots of great players make it work for them.
I've never learned to get comfortable with it because I play DB and EUB, so intonation would be off.
I usually bar across the two strings with what ever finger makes sense at the time.

I have taught myself to bar two frets with the pads of any one finger.As you gather more experience you should be able to also.For now do which ever finger works for you.

It's fundamental. There's no need to force playing in positions on the neck too awkward or impractical for the player if said player knows the fretboard, and knowing the fretboard is essentially useful to communicate more clearly. e.g. F# on the D string, B on the G string.

The first song I learned was "Money" - I saw youtube covers using two fingers/two strings/same fret, but found it much easier to simply fret both strings with my Pinky....

100%! You really need to know the note that each fret makes to play with other people. i. e. The 10th fret on the E string makes a deeper, darker sounding D then the fifth fret on the A string does. And a completely different sound than playing the open D string. You'll be amazed how much difference it makes. Bass on dude!!!

Same exact notes as "Money", so I'll use my pinky to fret both when I give it a try.

(Editied to add) - *Now that I re-watched the video on my laptop, the tab is NOT off by an eighth. I had my work laptop Bluetoothed to a PJB NanoX4, so I heard the Bluetooth delay....

Whichever finger is hitting the first note, I roll up or down to the second note.

Me too. Which option is more comfortable depends on which other notes come before and after, and how far up the neck it is.

For the specific line shown in post #6 of this thread I would probably use my index finger to barre the second fret notes on the A and E strings, or roll up and down between them, and my pinky to barre the fourth fret notes on the D and G strings.

(I say "barre", but note I would adjust the amount of pressure on each string so that - combined with natural muting from rest strokes in my plucking hand - only one string rings at a time unless I specifically want two or three ringing together.)

The sooner you get comfortable with barring, the better. This includes muting the string that is played first when you hit the next note, either with a right hand finger or by rocking the finger that's barring.

That is what I would do, push both the G and D string down at the same time.
