I like the "science" pronunciation; but I don't see that it's any big deal.

Languages are alive -- constantly changing. Think of the differences between modern English, and the way it was spoken a few hundred years ago. Well just about every change that ended up as the modern standard started out as a "mistake", or a mispronunciation, or mangled grammar.

It's so regional, too. There's this tension between the roots of any language, and the way it comes to be spoken away from its geographical center.

Hey, only in the USA does the Middle East contain Eye-raq and Eye-ran! But that's what's comfortable, state-side. Even Nikon is only N-eye-kon in North America.

I admit to cringing at "Newcular"; but I won't be at all surprised if in 50 years that's the common pronunciation!
