How would you describe that 'Ric" tone?

Here's my 4003, the main lick in Incubus' "Follow", which I just learnt last night and this morning. Thought I'd pull out the rick and see what it sounded like on a fretted bass.

This is straight into my mac, drum loop courtesy of my boss loop station. This is with both pickups on kind of favoring the bridge PU.....

I'd forgotten that ricks actually record fairly well..... Anyone want to trade a 4003 FL for a fretted model? This actually sounds kind of decent

Yeah this clip is far duller than you can get it to sound through an amp, it's just dull going into my computer for no apparent reason. I also have the bridge PU dialed back some which helps take out some of the mud.
The truss rods need a tweak on this one too since it has a little more relief than I like. That'd add some rattle.

I'd love a fretless model..... if I didn't have a Bunny on the way I'd try to just buy one outright. Maybe I can swing a trade... hmm......

Kinda sproingy and crunchy. In a good way. Hard to describe to someone who hasn't spent quality time with one. Very woody sounding, sit in a quiet room with no amp and play for a while you'll know what I mean. They don't seem to "make a bass sound" like a lot of other basses rather they seem to have more of an inherent voice or personality. I think this is one of the reasonns they are such a love/hate type of bass.

I hear them as sounding somewhat similar to a Jazz bass. Makes sense really- two single coil pickups. Placement is different, sure. Unique tone. Still, similar IMO.

Well, Geddy went from a Ric to a Jazz, and he still sounds like.....Geddy. Still, I'm not so sure that just anyone can get similar tones out of the two.
