Howard Jones with Nick Beggs on bass!

My wife and I saw Howard Jones last night, and to my surprise he had Nick Beggs on bass! What a fantastic show. HoJo still has it. Nick played the Chapman Stick nearly the entire show, and although the mix was really good, it was kind of hard to hear him. Regardless, he was having a blast!

I couldn't tell the brand on the FSO he's playing in this last pic, but it sounded great! And they actually played "Too Shy". How cool is that?

And I don't recognize the name Nick Beggs, but was excited to read about some new hard rock/metal bassist, haha!

Nick played bass for Kajagoogoo.

His work with Steven Wilson is amazing. I love his playing on the album "The Raven That Refused to Sing."

I was really hoping Beggs would be playing with Porcupine Tree when they hit the road but he had committed to the Howard Jones dates already.

Indeed he did! To be fair, the guy on the left behind the keyboards also had some electronic drums and would use sticks to play them on some songs.

Howard Jones's brother Martin played bass on several of Howard's albums. He can be seen in the video for "Things Can Only Get Better."


Unlike a lot of musicians Jones apparently was careful with his finances, and ended up well off.

Is there real bass on the original studio recording? I loved that bassline when it first hit the airwaves, but I remember thinking it was all synthesizer.

Nick Beggs has a great resume. In addition to the artists already mentioned in this thread that he's worked with, he played Chapman Stick and acoustic guitar in John Paul Jones' trio when they toured in the early 00s as King Crimson's opening act. And his own band Mute Gods (with Marco Minneman on drums) has two or three albums out that are worth a listen.

I saw Jones as an opening act for the Eurhythmics when he first emerged, and it seemed like it was all him with sequencers, plus just a drummer, IIRC. But that was a long time ago.
