Hudson Electronics Broadcast

Straight off the website:

DC SOCKET – The Broadcast requires a DC power supply unit (PSU) and can run at voltages between 9v and 24v; running the Broadcast at 18v or 24v gives it more headroom, output level and clarity. This is great for use with bass or when using the Broadcast as a clean pre-amp boost.

Please ensure your PSU can supply between 9v and 24, a minimum current of 20mA and has a 2.1mm negative centre barrel plug. Any other type may damage your pedal. If you plan on sharing the same PSU with other pedals, we recommend using a PSU with isolated outputs, e.g. Voodoo Lab PP2.

CURRENT DRAW – Typically less than 20mA
 
Quick question here: I have an Ictineo and love the sound it gives. Would you all say the Broadcast makes it obsolete or can they compliment each other? Also my instinct says Ictineo -> Broadcast rather than the other way. What are your thoughts?

I've never used a Broadcast, but I typically treat the Ictineo as a preamp-type pedal. Meaning I lean towards having it near the end of the chain, with most other pedals feeding into it.

So uh... late to the party here.

Just picked up an LTD Broadcast and spent a bit of time with it. So far yes... it sounds surprisingly good! Always been a fan of FET type OD's and been eyeing this for a couple years. My Broadcast is very dynamic and touch sensitive in that in one setting... I can get beautiful clean sounds that break up beautifully, right in my digging in sweet spot. Also, one thing I can't get out of any other OD pedal or combination thereof... is that the Broadcast will naturally fatten up everything in the upper register to the point of actually being beautifully bright, fat and glassy sounding BUT THIS... allows the rolling off of the tone knob on my bass way farther back than usual without sucking the detail and tone from the sound. I'm then left with a fatter, thicker more lively sound throughout the upper registers... especially on all the thinner strings. And again, usable either clean or dirty depending on how sensitive you set the gains. Loving it so far. :thumbsup:

i love the Broadcast too, however it's not an FET OD but rather a germanium one with an output transformer.

Right! Not FET. :thumbsdown: I liken the Broadcast to the JohnK Transboost I had way back. Both great sounding pedals. It’s the output transformer that’s got the magic for me I guess. Not an electrical engineer by any means over here! But I’m slowly learning to pay attention to the details. :thumbsup:

Okay, I just received my Broadcast this afternoon. I went with the green USA special edition single channel model that runs at 24V internally. If you are on the fence at all, then just go buy one...seriously an amazing piece of gear!

I will say that my main reason for wanting it is for the ability to get that saturated transformer sound. For this purpose, I will say that the model I got is the perfect one. I say that because this 24V model has a 3-position switch whereas the normal model has a 2-position switch. The 3rd position (center) is an even lower gain on the germanium circuit. So, that mode is fairly clean and allows the transformer to be pushed without getting overly fuzzy. I don't think this lowest gain setting can be gotten out of the dual channel models, either. So, if your goal is transformer saturation first and foremost then I would say get a single channel version that has the 3-position gain switch and can run at 24V internally.

Anyhow, I'm absolutely blown away! This pedal is better than I was expecting. The tone I am getting is much fuller, but tighter and also adds nice note definition. I have a rehearsal and a few gigs this weekend so I'll be putting it through the paces in multiple environments, but this seems to be a real winner in every way.

I'll just restate again that if your tonal desires match with what I'm saying above then just go buy one...NOW! There are a few places that still have stock of this green special edition single channel 24V model...and some have free shipping. So, not cheap, but worth it!!!

To start out, I play bass, and have read reviews on talkbass.com with the utmost interest. I play mainly for a non-denominational church, but also play classic rock occasionally.

I have heard people report that the 24v broadcast with the triple switch has a low gain setting allowing great saturation. In addition to saturation, I would also be interested in versatility, if possible, and was wondering how low the gain goes on the dual foot switch?

I've read that there are internal trim pots for the gain for each switch on the dual foot switch model. Can the dual foot switch model go as low (gain) as the 24v with the triple switch in low mode, and achieve similar saturation? I am primarily looking for this saturation talkbass members speaks of. I think it would be good driving my Sonic Farm 2di4 tube DI.

Oh, and one other thing. I know the 24v broadcast takes 9v input only, and the dual foot switch model takes 9v-24v input. If I were to purchase the dual foot switch model I would probably get a power supply that can feed 9v, 18v, or 24v, again, for versatility.

I tried to find an online manual but could not find one.

Your honest evaluation would be much appreciated!

I have a dual footswitch with internal volt pump to 24 volt. It has the 3 way gain switch. Does low gain well. There is only one internal trim pot, and it's only for the 2nd higher gain channel. The 3 way switch options: L/H L/M M/H.

Your switch options would indicate this device is always on, even when the foot switch light is off? L/H L/M M/H depending on internal and external trim settings? So the switch is not really a bypass or off switch but a low/high, depending on trim?
