Humbucker puzzlement

This is a Yamaha BB300 which I converted to a 5 string HH a few years ago. Since that time I've done a lot of tone-chasing while this one hung on the wall. I just got it down to play it and noticed something that I didn't back then: the bridge pickup sounds like a MM humbucker- as it should- but the bridge pickup sounds like a Precision pickup. None of the characteristic humbucker "blunnng"; all Precision "bonk". I've checked my wiring and it seems fine...these are aftermarket pickups with one hot lead and one ground. Controls are V/B/tonestack. What could be happening here?
