Trip Wamsley here. I'm in Nashville riding this thing out. My town which is Lake Charles/Sulphur got hit pretty hard. All of my people got out and they are all fine. Our house made it through OK we think. Glad you Houstonians were spared some of the wrath.

...my folks didn't do so well with the "stuff" part of things after Katrina, but they're OK, and that's what matters. Everything else is just "stuff"...

We tried to leave early Thursday morning. We had planned to go to Beaumont the night before but when we got up Thursday morning the projections said it was going to hit Beaumont. We were going to stay with my aunt, but I called her and told her to get out and that we were heading west. We got about 5 miles from the house and hit traffic. We decided to head back home and ride it out figuring we'd be on the weak side and that it might continue to move east. When we got up Friday morning the path hadn't changed so we decided to head south on IH59 to S. Padre rather than taking a chance sitting around with no power. My Dad has a condo in Port Isabel on the mainland side that we stayed in. We got there with no problems at all. There were plenty of gas stations open on the way starting around Victoria and *no* traffic. We drove back in last night with no problems, plenty of gas and no traffic. My Dad tried to head south Wednesday evening but the roads were closed, since they thought the hurricane was heading in that direction. He ended up being forced to head north. It took him 15 hours to get to Dallas. He was kicking himself for not waiting a little longer...I think his wife was panicing and wanted to get out. We were very fortunate. Evidently we never lost power here. Just some blips. We had analog cable when we got home last night. The digital cable, internet and digital phone were all working this morning. We've got a lot of tree branches down in the yard, a few hours work. I imagine my aunt's house in Beaumont is a mess. Our prayers go out to the east Texas and Louisana folks. We'll be doing what we can to help out.

Well I've been at a hotel in Lufkin since Friday morning. I've been at a family friend's house in Houston for the past few hours. Somewhere on Jones road, off of 290.
Our house is unharmed. A few trees in our yard fell, but none of them hit anything important.
Not sure how long I'll be here, since power is out in Beaumont and probably will be for at least a month. I might even have to enroll into a Houston high school somewhere.
Good to know everyone is alright and etc.

Glad to hear that you and the house are OK. Your description of the property sounds exactly like my yard after Katrina.
Try to get a good read on the high school, but if it's only a month, it's probably not worth it to enroll elsewhere. My kids have been out since Katrina (end of August), and the schools are starting back up next Monday (Oct. 3). So they will have missed a month. The schools have a plan to make up the missed days by shortening holiday weeks and going a bit deeper into the summer than originally scheduled.
And it seems that all the students that enrolled elsewhere basically wasted their time; they'll pick up right along with everyone else when they return.
Now, if it's considerably longer than a month, that's a different kettle of fish....
I was thinking something like that would be the case, but I wasn't sure. If thats what will happen, I'll either try to find a temporary job up here so I can make some money during the month off or I'll go back home with my father and help with the clean up efforts in my community.bigbeefdog said:

EDIT: Trip, this is AJ. You know, the kid that has seen you twice at Log-On and also hung out with you and Steve/Doc there with some Black Eyed Pea afterwards. Good to see you're alright.
Just got back in from my family's in Georgia...it took us 11 hours, from 5pm until 3am, to go up 146 to I-10E. That's roughly 38 miles from my house. 22 hours into Blioxi, where we got a shower, dinner, and a good nite's sleep. Another 7 into Macon, where we spent three days with my family. Left Monday morning at 1030am, drove to Biloxi. Had dinner, spent the nite there, picked up my car which we had left there, and drove from 9am to 7pm (normally a 6 hour drive). Came back through Louisiana and Beaumont, let me tell you, it is a MESS! I have a bunch of pics, they were not letting you exit the freeway, nor was there any gas from Crowley, La. (REALLY long gas lines there) to Winnie, Tx. (also really long gas lines). I'll do a thread on our trip and the horrors we saw tomorrow. Right now, I just wanted to check in and let people know we're OK. No damage to the house, our fridge was STANK-OLA, but we got things going on now.

Don't believe the hype. Following Katrina, power was supposed to be out in Slidell for 8-12 weeks. We got juice after 2. Places on the lake...well ...that might be a while.
Estimated time of hook-up is high-balled for the hardest-hit areas so nobody throws a fit about it taking too long.

I already saw crews working to restore power. There are high-tension lines down across I-10 on the east side of Beaumont, I drove over them.
Glad to see everything went good for you Trip, it's Tim Pruitt here...the crackhouse door kickin in / bass player.
My place did so-so but it will be several weeks before my family can return. No power / water for us out by the LC airport. They clocked the winds out by my house at 125mph which ultimatley caused part of the airport terminal to collapse and knocked the weather station out. Alot of my freinds and co-workers have lost it everything.
I have been living at the station every since the 23rd and it really sucks. No A/C and little sleep.
We caught some looters over in Sulphur not too far from your place Trip. We've captured close to a hundred so far, amazing what you can see with NVG and bird over your shoulder.
I've gotta go get some sleep but there is one last thing.
If a hurricane comes your way...get the hell outta town early.
Don't wait just LEAVE. This was the single most terrifying event I have ever witnessed and it wasn't a Cat. 5.
I've seen alot of crap and blood shed that is dispensed by human beings but this is something you can't control or imagine. Just get out.
I'll never stay for one again, period.

trip here. running the computer and the dsl on a generator. got water and phone and dls. no power. house ok and life good. house ok. me type short sentences. sign off now.
Just reading this thread, weeks after the fact. All of my people are in great shape and the property side of the equation fared very well, too - including my parents' house in Port Arthur. Still no regular internet access for me, but things are starting to return to "normal."
I posted a thread with some pix in OT before I found this thread, btw.
