Keep in mind that I'm north of Houston (Spring, TX to be exact) and will do just fine. Only one of my neighbors on my street are leaving, so in the event of my house being torn apart, I'll high tail it down the street to one of my neighbors houses. I have, however, prepared myself for this storm. All of the furniture has been moved to the middle of the rooms, my tubs are filled with water, I have food stocked in a closet, and three industrial sized jugs of water sitting in a corner in my kitchen. My biggest concern is having to deal with no electricity and AC for a few days. Wind damage won't be that bad I'm hoping.

Secretdonkey lives in Beaumont....he and a friend are coming to San Antonio to stay with my wife and I....I hope everything goes OK....from what some of you guys are saying, a drive to Dallas sounds very long...I wonder how long it was take him to get to San Antonio?

You guys are constantly in my thoughts and am literally getting a little depressed just thinking about it more and more...
Well they opened up the outbound lanes on I45, but I don't know what highway they're working on right now. Nonetheless, it will take roughly 14 hours to get from Houston to San Antonio. Keep in mind cell phones barely work here because so many people are calling. I've been trying to get ahold of my friends lately. I was able to get a call through to my friend that left at 6:30 this morning. She got to Tomball (10 miles away) and this was at 10:30. It's madness out here. I tried to go to Wendy's this afternoon and it was drive-thru only with a line going into the street itself and into a VERY busy intersection. There is traffic stacked up for dozens of miles, and they're not even on interstates or highways! These are streets that I have driven on literally my entire life and never have I seen something of this magnitude. It's very scary to see my town panic like this.
darkfish...with all due respect your decision is certainly your decision but I have to ask how many category 3 or higher storms you have actually been through? I went through 17 named storms including Andrew over 9 years in South Florida and I can tell you that if the worst happens you will be praying for help and wishing you had left. As mentioned earlier, after Andrew I NEVER stayed for another one!! They are saying RIGHT now in the hurricane center in Miami that Houston is GOING to get hit HARD, 20 to 50 feet (with top water, waves and surge) of storm surge will travel SEVERAL miles inland not to mention what 125 mile an hour winds will do. I have seen CONCRETE structures fail in Andrew and I fear this one is going to be worse...don't take any chances, "I hate traffic" right now could be the same thing as saying "I hate living"....GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN.. I would rather sit in traffic for 2 days and LIVE than stay home and die.....just my opinion having lived through this myself bro!! We are praying for you and everyone in harm's way......please let us know you are OK after thisi goes past!!!!!!!!!!

Weather says the outside of the hurricane is gonna start hitting Galveston tomorrow, and Houston on Saturday.
I've got a house full of evacuees (for the second time this month). One group got here (Austin) from Houston in 7 hours by taking farm roads (some dirt, gravel) all the way. He's got a GPS locator and mapping system that made it possible.
Another carload left Houston at 3am Thursday morning and just pulled in at midnight last night for a total of 21 hours on the road. I can't even imagine...

well at this very moments things are looking up. The storm is still heading east towards the TX/ LA border and the main brunt should not be felt in houston proper. It currently 12-o'clock lunch time and the sky is starting to cloud up, its surprisingly cool and the wind if picking up, the "calm before the storm" routine. There are tons of people around town still, but NO gas to be found anywhere, and a few grocery stores have recieved resupplies, a local home depot even got on TV and mentioned that got in 3 shippments of plywood and generators. better late than never.
I would mention to anyone to not venture out at this point and to wait it out. We will get lots of rain, and high winds but not what could have been. I suspect we will loose power for a couple to a few days, we frequently loose power here after heavy thunderstorms.
Word is that the hwys are moving somewhat better w/ many of the major hwyway being only one direction out of houston (idiots policy makers wait til 5pm thursday nite to turn traffic around) and what once took 17-24 hrs to make it to dallas is now getting there in under 10hrs. I got a call from a friend who left at 4Am this morning and cruised to south of dallas before 10Am. Unfortunately there was a serious accident on HWy45 which blokced traffic for many hrs -a bus full of elderly exploded when their O2 tanks caught fire. apparently half onboard died.
Anyway so far so good.

CATEGORY 3!! Thank God I was wrong....it appears not only is it taking a bit more Northerly track, but it is weakening a bit as well...It will still be a serious threat wherever it makes landfall but it will not be as nearly as bad as it could have been.....Good Luck and keep us posted on your status EVERYONE!

Well guys as I sit here at my work computer we are waiting for it to hit us close to head on. My family left a couple of days ago but because of my job, Lake Charles PD...I am here securing the main station.
We are expecting to get our butts kicked and we have prepared the best we can. We have mandatory evacs and curfews. When the winds hit around 40mph we will "lock-down" until it passes.
Winds are strong now with some rain. We are expecting to have hurricane force winds of 80mph+ to last between 8-14 hours.
It don't look good.
But my baby, Cirrus , did come with me. Could not stand to leave her at home alone.

It's all up to Rita now, but it doesn't look good for him, but looks really, really bad for his parents, they may not have a home to come back to...

good news for us Houstonians and bad news for peeps in Beaumont, Liberty county, and Lake Charles .
Houston looks like it experienced a large windstorm w/ little rain. Infact my part of town (mid town) didnt loose power. there are branches down everywhere, and leaves shed from trees, anything loose has blown around, but nothing major. Roads ar epassable and the workcrews are already out cutting down fallen/broken tree limbs that block the roads.There is barely any wetness on the ground here in houston, drizzling really. Currently the sun is trying to peek out behind a wall of clouds and its on/off sprinkling. The only constant is a 30-40mph wind gust. My part of houston looks no different that if we had a large thunderstorm.
Now if you watch the news it looks like liberty county took a major hit as did downtown Beaumont.

I'm alright, guys. The storm was weak where I was, so the worst my house got was a skillet in one of the windows. I was without electricity for 24 hours though (no TV, AC, or internet!) So all of my meals consisted of grilled chicken and beans. That's the Texas way. 
My mom called me midway through it and told me everything was perfectly ok and that I worried for nothing. They didnt lose power, and everything they could see out of the window was almost exactly the same as it looked normally, just more windy.
