Hypex UcD-XXXst/ad ??

Hi.

I did a search and couldn't find anything on TB. Not much on the net either with a quick search. And I'd rather take the opinions and experiences of the people whose knowledge level I'm familiar with, than any random folks in the net.

I'm planning to build a few active PA columns/wedges as my Carver Pm5.1s are PITA to use in 240V world. Not much point in class H if you have a 2kW step-down transformer to haul around ;).

Is the ad 8620 chip (+other added features?) worth the 35% higher price in MI/SR/PA use?

As I'm planning to use the UcD-400xx and UcD-180xx biamped, the cross over frequency will be quite low so I'd like to know would the "added clarity" or whatever of the ad's matter that much. Especially in the UcD-400.

Thanks fast slapper, I did browse a bit on the diyaudio some time ago, but as the stuff was mostly Hi-Fi/home theatre stuff, their demands and expectations are a bit different.

As for the speakers, I was thinking about Eminence Neos 15" and 12" for lo/mid, but the hi freq horn I haven't been thinking that much. I do have a Beyma 1" driver though, might use that for the prototype. As the hi frequency reproduction doesn't take much power anyway I was thinking about perhaps adding a separate A/B amp for that.

I did buy a pair of the 400W modules. I bought a suitable toroid, filter caps and then decided that I wanted to mount all of this stuff within the frame of a defunct H&H IC100 amplifier. I have already modified this amp with a full tube pre-amp. It sounded good but at 100W for the original power amp not so loud. Hypex are, they tell me, working on a SMPS for these modules so I'm having to wait until they appear!

Don't overlook Fitzmaurice cabs if you plan on using Eminence. I built a diy 1x15(3-way) with a 3015 and an OTop 15 to compare the differences. As to be expected, the horn loaded 3015 walked all over my cab in output capability. It will sound better when I put a good mid/high driver in it.

Hi.

I've looked at the BFM designs and I'm a BIG fan of horns, but I've found combining them with direct radiators a bit difficult and time consuming when venues change. I do have true 3D composite horns in the planning stage though, the problem is that they've been in the planning stage for about 20 years now ;)

A defunct H&H, IME those would be plentiful ;), at least they were in here. I have a blown 3RD Generation, wasn't that a decendant of H&H. I have a few Fet amp rack units that I've been planning to retrofit with different amplifier modules, but the active cabs are so much more convenient than separates. Not so versatile of course, but the load in and load out is much simpler. Not to mention connecting them.

In all reality I don't expect powerful SMPS for DIYers any time soon. I've studied the designs on my own a bit, and as the power goes up, the reliability sinks like a rock. There will be one in the future, but I'd say we have to wait quite a while.

I've tried some of the Hypex amp modules in a few of our prototypes and they were very good sounding amps. Very dynamic, lively sound and very responsive to playing technique. I would put these more on the fast, bright and crisp side of the tone spectrum rather than the big, fat ,warm and plush side. Very nice products, but at the time, considering the cost, exchange rate and shipping charges from the other side of the world, these turned out to be an expensive option.

While I agree that I have been waiting for more that a year for this to happen, I prefer that than them releasing a poor product prematurely. Jan Peter seems like a conscientious gentleman and I am sure that he and the rest of the Hypex team ar just as anxious to get the things out as you and I.

I agree Sam but these would be for one of Hypex's own specific products. Let's face it SMP supplies are everywhere nowadays. From computers, peripherals, light weight amps to car poweramp modules. I don't see much difference between powering a 1000W amp from 12V DC or from the AC mains. It should in fact be simpler. I guess we just have to wait. :(

We do run a tube in front. Power amps have a huge effect on the overall tone of your rig. Every prower amp yeilded different results with our preamp, each adding thier own flavor to the mix. The Hypex stuff is very good, but it all comes down to the tone goals you are after.

They would be a great choice for players 6 strings players and those that do a lot of slapping and 2 handed tapping techniques. Thier amps have a way of making the notes seem like they are jumping of the fretboad. Very lively sounding, but bigger and more ballsy than the B&O modules. We were just looking for something a bit more plush and warm sounding than we could get from the Hypex.
