The primary topic was the modules (or the difference between xxx-st and xxx-ad to be precise) themselves, not my particular application. That was only to point out the MI/PA application opposed to the Hi-Fi approach. And whether the added cost of the upgrades would be beneficial in MI applications. For me an amp is an amp and I will use these active cabs for bass too.
And now back to the topic

I couldn't find any info what so ever anywhere why would I need to purchase the ad version, and even the guy behind the counter wasn't really sure, so 400 later (with the transformer) here they are: the Hypex st modules

The regular kazoo is for the size comparison purpose, ain't these modules cute.
Top left is the UcD400st, below UcD180st, and top right the Supply-st.
On the Hypex website and everywhere else for that matter, the size is a bit vague without anything to compare them with. Sure the TO220 casing gives some clues, but still I was quite amazed about the size. In the future, if these work as advertized, I'll suggest any amp with a blown power amp to be retrofitted with these if the rail voltages are compatible. The price of the modules is after all about 1.5-2 hours of troubleshooting and repair. And if one's really lucky, the amp output will be doubled.
The rail voltages,
. Made the stupidest, stupidest mistake there. For some reason I was under the impression that both the modules would use the same voltages (I'd design them that way), some paragraphs could even be interpreted that way, but nope. I don't think that I'll be able to use both modules with the same supply without lowering the rails 15V for the 180st
. Probably not worth it.
The 400st works with 45-63V (Overvoltage protection 68V) and the 180st 30-45V (Overvoltage protection 52V).
The toroid itself is HUGE, at least compared with the modules, but still well within reason for the amp output power. The 92% efficiency does have its benefits for sure
.
I'll keep You all updated as I make the first test runs, probably by the end of the week. Couldn't get the 18-Sound horn I would've liked to use in the prototype, so I have to improvize on that.
