I am befuddled.. Protools or Logic

I'm not trying to pick at you or be an a-hole here or anything... it's just that I see the criticism of PT MIDI all the time everywhere and everybody always says that it's no good but I never see an explanation of why... just blanket statements. Out of curiousity, in your opinion, what is it that's missing or that you don't like about it?

First a DISCLAIMER - It's been a while since I used ProTools. Secondly, I've been a registered Cakewalk user since it was a MIDI only DOS program owned by TwelveTone. (I think I first registered in 1985).

The lack of MIDI editing views was the big deal for me. I rarely (to never) use the piano roll view. Last time I used PT's it was the only view. I prefer the Score view and what Cakewalk/Sonar call the 'Event list' view.

I have no preference in the choices offered as the main topic of the thread. I use HomeStudio ona PC.

I have both Sonar and PT 7. I think PT 7 is the better choice for recording audio AND just about every pro studio in the world has PT so you're in good shape if you need to take some tracks into a pro studio. The MIDI on PT 7 is a vast improvement over previous generations, but as previous posters have mentioned it is still not quite in the category as some of the other programs such as Sonar or Logic.

It's pretty easy to see that Sonar & Logic were originally MIDI sequencers that eventually added audio support, so their MIDI is better than their audio funtionality. PT on the other hand was strictly audio for a long time, so audio perfermonce is great, but MIDI is just "OK".

Really, either way should be fine. I find that most applications out there will work for the vast majority of users. It wasn't so long ago that we were all using 4-track cassette recorders (and we thought those were pretty good). ooops....did I just make myself sound really old ;-)

Logic for me. I used PT5 and PT6 for a few years and then eventually moved to Logic Pro 7. People often talk about the steep learning curve with Logic, and while it is true to some degree, I think it can be misleading.

You can be making in music in LP7 pretty quickly even if fully utilizing the entire feature set takes longer. I've found that I learn new things about LP7 all the time as my needs change. The incredibly robust feature set, plug-in suite, and midi capabilities make it the best choice for my needs.

I also like the fact that Apple tends to upgrade it much more quickly to meet OS or hardware spec changes much quicker than what I was seeing with either Digi or MOTU DP.
