I bought my first ever CD on the weekend.

Hi!

This might be weird to most of you, but I just got my first two CDs on the weekend, this past Friday (I often work night shifts etc so to me, Friday was the weekend :P).

I really do not enjoy the current streaming services and the requirement to be always online for most of them and the God awful implementation of most of the offline modes along with ads, so I decided to buy their stuff in the meatspace.

I grew up poor and I never had most of the things that a lot of people in the western world take for granted, so this felt a lot like rewarding my child-self a little bit and being my own cool mom :) My whole idea is to go to the CD store every month and pick one album that I am a fan of and one album that I know nothing about.

So... one old, one new. That way I collect my faves and add something new to my listening, whatever it ends up being.

During the holidays I received a few gift cards, so with these I was able to buy a CD drive to rip the CDs onto my Music app that's on my iMac. The next step?

Buying a modded iPod classic 5.5 with an upgraded battery and storage, Wolfson DAC and to get some IEMs to tie it all together for that ultimate old-new-on-the-go music solution.

Anyway, the music I got so far is -
The Black Dahlia Murder - the Nocturnal album from 2007. My old favourite...
I really like that the cover for the case doubles as a booklet with lyrics for every single song on the album, such a great thing!

Benighted - Obscene Repressed from 2020. I had no idea what this was, turned out pretty good. I would get another album from them :) Some of the songs are in French, which really messed me up for a moment. Also, the song "Muzzle" has this bizarre jazz (?) in the middle, this made me laugh so much (I was drunk, had 5 bottles of mead...) that it became my instant favourite.

So that's it for now. We will see what I get at the end of this month.
Thanks and until next time TB! :)

I met The Black Daliah guys that were rehearsing at a house a door down from a home I was selling (in my old Realty days). Even back then, around 2007-'08 I looked 'em up and they had an impressive following. Seemed like nice lads.

If I like a song or a band/performer's 'album', I'll buy it 'cause I want to own the ability to use the music across my mp3 or casual playing around the house-car.

It's the highest compliment you can pay a performer is to trade cash for their efforts.

As Plunk Murray, when we get Spotify/iTunes downloads, we get about 2.8c per download.

I've lived long enough to know sooner or later everything crashes and stored everything vanishes into the ether.

With physical media, it can go right on doing it, I'm good. Believe me, I can see all that money I spent on iTunes just going bye-bye !

The head of IT at a previous job told me she always pays the extra charge for CD's of every program loaded on a new desktop or laptop as insurance . . . . against the inevitable. Plus on the jacket, you get credits or lyrics, occasionally even liner notes ! !

We have more than a few used music stores here in Nashville (who do BIG business in LP's), so I don't ever plan of downloads, just not for me.

There's a place near me that is a CD shop, that also sells some old electronics and vinyls. Very lucky to have it and there's a cool small vinyl shop near me too. Some chain vinyl places exist, and I rather see that then just plain old Target having a small CD section.

Enjoy man, it is a fun hobby to collect and I love just getting lost listening to my vinyl or CDs in my room. Also my car has a cassette player... maybe the next thing :)

Also I'm Gen-Z and vinyls, CDs are for an odd reason for us back on the rise, maybe we are just weird like that, hipster thing I guess.

Physical media is great! I was born in the 70s. So my voyage went from vinyl to tape to CD to downloads and back to vinyl and the occasional CD. Being able to hold the media, view the artwork, read the notes and lyrics, and all the other things that come with the physical formats absolutely enhance the experience the artists wanted you to share with you. Welcome to the club!

Just wait until you get an LP with liner notes!
Didn't even know that was a thing until I read your post. Awesome :)

Happy new CD day! Hopefully the iPod upgrades work well for you
Thanks! I've listened to the albums a few times since I got them. I'll post an update once I've bought the iPod and some IEMs for them.

Here in the USA, prices on used CDs have cratered. It’s a buyer’s market for sure. When I contacted some used record stores about selling some LPs to them when I mentioned I also had CDs none of them were interested.

I don't know if you have thrift stores like Goodwill in Sweden, but they are practically giving CDs away. Your money doesn't go to the performers but you could build a nice collection pretty quickly.
So, two things.
As far as I can tell, the Black Dahlia Murder album was brand new. Tight, unsealed package. Perfect condition. Brand new smell.

The Benighted album was packed slightly looser than the first one but my SO said that it might be due to the difference in how different labels pack and distribute their releases because as far as we both could tell, this album was also brand new, not used. Perfect condition as well.

And yes, we do have thrift/second hand stores here - but the store I went to was just a cd/vinyl/casette place. Totally my vibe, I fit right in even though I was masked up in a scarf and a huge winter hat with a pom-pom on top. Everyone was tatted up just like me, the whole place was so small you had to bump into people. They also have a Rickenbacker 4001 on the wall, I'll ask about it next time. I saw that it was signed by some people so idk what's up with that. But yeah, I'm going back there after my next paycheck :)

I got really tired of the streaming. I tried but it's not for me. Too inconvienient.they take away songs/albums as they see fit. Screw that, I want to own what I want to own and not let some algorithm or some suit decide what I can and cannot listen to.

I think us who are younger are getting more and more disillusioned with the digital world. It was supposed to be nice but it's been either made just to turn the max profit or it's just not nice to be around anymore. I know I don't like it, minus TalkBass. TB is still ok.
:)

Thanks!

Adter realizing that I hadn’t touched my CD collection that was in storage for years, I ended giving 300 or so away on Facebook. I’m buying some on vinyl and I don’t even have a turntable.

I remember when the first CD player I bought started having tracking problems when I thought I had bought a lifetime storage medium, compared to vinyl degraded. With computers no longer taking a disc It will probably be soon where being unable to replace the players will leave metal covered plastic as well as vinyl as wall art.

Yes!! Vinyl has the best sound. When producers went to CD wave format they had to reduce the “sound” to make the album fit the cd. Then mp3 came out. Reduced the “sound” even more. So. Congrats on the CD format purchase! Move on to vinyl. Grew up poor? Yes, me too. I lived on the edge of the ghetto all my life because we could not afford anything else. (Sorry if that offends anyone) fortunately God has blessed me enough to live in a better neighborhood. I do like inexpensive basses.
