I can only play 1 bass for 6 months...!

So heres the deal, I have a contract position (6 months) in Ottawa. Its about a 10 hour drive from my current apartment and i only have room in my sunfire for 1 of my three basses.

My choices are:

(1) A Fender Highway one Jazz bass, with a Dimarizio Area Js
(2) A Fender Road Worn Precision
(3) A Fender Jaguar

They all have their strengths, so i am really stumped!

The Jazz is what I have played for all my shows, its comfy and sounds great.

The RW Precision, has that classic precision sound, I love that chunky maple neck, and mojo it comes with. I always seem to write the best lines on it.

The Jaguar is the new bass, i just got it. Just got it fixed up and put a tort guard on it with the black.

I want to bring my favs (jazz and P) but I am kinda afraid of something happening to them. Car crash, break in, stolen extra...

What do you guys think i should bring ? I am stumped!

Have either a Fender Noiseless Jazz pickup or a DiMarzio Ultra Jazz pickup installed in the bridge position of the RW P-bass and use it, adding another knob for a V-V-T setup. This will give you the widest variety of tones you will most likely use on the show. This is basically what I did for the PBS TV special I played a few years ago.

Madbassplaya, thats exactly what I was thinking..

All the basses are comfy to play, and all sound great... Also, i dont plan on modding any of the basses just for 6 months of play sorry.

Depends. If it were me, I'd be planning on jamming and gigging as much as possible (as a sub) so I'd take the most versatile (Jag - active electronics) as I play a buncha different genres.

Also you seem to have less of a sentimental attachment to it.

If you write your best lines on the P-bass, bring that and a drum machine program and start plunking away.

There has got to be a way to make two basses fit if one fits. Lay it across your lap if you have to.

Are they in cases or gig bags? IME, there are gig bags that take up less room than a case...there's also double gig bags available.

If it's just for the joy of playing, then go with the one that you end up noodling around by yourself, more than the others. If it's a matter of taking an instrument that reduces the amount of financial loss if something were to happen that was unfortunate, you'll have to decide which one you'd be more willing to lose if push came to shove.

Take the Jag!

I'm prejudiced... I just got my first serious bass and choose a Jag for a lot of reasons, but I'm thinking in your case spending some time with it and it alone will reveal it's strengths to you and expand your pallet.

Plus, if something happens, you have less personal attachment to it.
