I can't get into Jaco

Really? We kind of have Victor Wooten and Wooten wannabes, as well as John Myung and Myung wannabes... And they care much less about musical complexity or ability? Mainstream bass playing, I agree, but the rest?
Maybe not so much technology as the sheer number of people in this planet. How easy can it be to be above mediocre or even exceptional if you have to compete with 6 billion others? (EDIT: sorry, I've just updated my number... it seems we just reached the 7 billion mark!)
Word! Taste does change over time. At least it does for me: going from Nu Metal to Jazz and Reggae? Come on.
I have not read this thread, so if somebody already said this, please forgive me, but if you can't get into Jaco, cool! Who knows, by not listening to Jaco, maybe you will come up with incredible new innovations that will turn the bass world upside down.
You guys know Tilapia is actually a bottom feeding trash fish, right? I forget the original name of it, but they started calling it Tilapia so they could sell it in restaurants. I love fish - won't eat Tilapie

i was 15 when i first heard jaco play, to this day he still inspires me. do i want to sound like him no, but i have to admit i have stolen a few licks here and there. i do not think he was the greatest bass player ever, their is no such thing but there was bass before him and after
Same goes for the saxophonist that doesn't listen to Bird, Coltrane, Ornette...?
The track is "Flight Of The Newborn" from No Mystery. On further review, maybe more On The Corner/Miles-esque than Headhunters-esque.
At the time listening to Bird or Coleman was like doing homework. It was not done for pleasure, the same could be said for much of Trane's work. However I did "get it" even if the genre or actual melodies was not what I wanted to hear.

Interesting analogy. Quite possibly, yes
But just as likely, the saxophonist who wont listen to Bird, Coltrane, Ornette, does so because he stodgily believes that corny trad jazz is the only 'true' jazz....
EDIT: I'm not saying all trad jazz is corny - but it can be, when played with a closeminded mentality
Maybe, I think that when creative and original people have a vision, they blaze new trails. Sometimes what you don't listen to affects you just as much as what you do listen to.
I wonder what TB would look like if everybody made a thread about every bass player that they aren't into.
A privious post said it the way I feel... If you aren't into jazz then you possibly can't get Jaco's playing.
Without any stats... I would say that most if not all jazz bassists can "get into Jaco."
