I had no idea. I do that song almost every week at my regular gig. Funny seeing that Nathan's fingering is completely different to how I play it. 
Nathan East is a lot of people‘s favorite bass player, they just don’t know it!
I love the way the original recording sounds, but I thought the bass and drums were MIDI. So precise and clear.
The majority of what you hear on the recording (bass-wise) is synth bass. If you listen to the 12" version you can hear when the bass guitar comes in to double the synth.
I'd watch those 80's MTV vids and every so often with this or that artist, this handsome man, always with a white BB5000 would be in there somewhere, and found out who he was and those vids had him swimming around the deep end making those parts. Yowzah !

Same. Through the years now and then I’ll go back and watch an old video I remember from the 80s. Shocking how often he ends up being the guy. I had no idea who he was at the time.

Am I hearing this wrong?
The MIDI bass on the 12“ plays a half step below the root (on the 3 and) while Nathan East is playing a whole step in his performance in the video.

Nathan East is the epitome of sneaky good. Nathan East plays bass parts that often don’t stand out, but when you really listen, you realize just how much music he is making. I remember reading an interview of Nathan East and he said he did not want a readily identifiable sound like Jaco because people like that are hot for awhile, but then they are let go. He wanted a less obvious sound that would let him blend in. Nathan East has managed to do just that.
That is so true. I can think no of many sides he's on, yet there's nothing that tie them together. The one place I can spot him with him mixed so prominently is 'Two Hearts', the Phil Collins track that grabbed me quick with him chugging along on dotted low C's in the chorus, and the Motown vibe he wove to fit that chart.
You're not hearing it wrong, Nathan just forgot the original line.
He gets a pass though (he's probably forgotten more lines from recording's he's done than most TBers combined have recorded).
