Hey, no joke! About five years ago I did that knot thing with an ancient set of 70s Fender flats that just sounded too damn good to scrap. G string snapped on a gig, so I did the McGyver thing. Lasted for several more years. ;-)

Ooooh Antigua alert!!!!
I might actually do this to all the strings on one of my bass’s just to watch the OCD types get twitchy

That one hurt as they were a brand new set of ground wound strings I put on to try. I hadn't cut them to length as I wasn't sure i'd want to keep them on that bass. I did like them so I was loosening them off to cut to size when I broke it. I'm still waiting on a set of strings I ordered 4 weeks ago.... just one of the downsides of living on an island in the middle of nowhere. Is this real? No way I would have attempted that.
I thought of trying that. lol
Measure once cut twice? I actually measured correctly to the wrong tuner.measure twice cut once![]()
I would have thought a reef knot would be most appropriate here...
That would have happened.Good thing you had that Hofner. If not, you would've had to go buy a new short scale bass to salvage that string.
As my brother the woodworker says, "Power tools just let you screw something up faster."I can't recall cutting a string too short but twice in the last few months I have broken a string when removing the strings for some maintenance. I use a fast winder on a cordless drill and on both occasions had the drill going the wrong way and ..... SNAP!...
First time was on my 12 string guitar. That'll be $30 thanks. Not so bad as those Elixir's had been on there for over 7 years and I didn't originally pay for them.
Second time on my SR1200..... that'll be $70 thanks. That one hurt as they were a brand new set of ground wound strings I put on to try.
