I don't like being hugged!

One of these may help:

Am I right that most of the participants in this thread are of the male persuasion? Try being a so-called "attractive" female. THEN you'll know what it is to be hugged when you don't want to be (and I won't even get into all the unwelcome hair re-arranging and unsolicited fashion advice)! Dear god, the arguments I've had with guys (and even a couple of gals) over the years who just couldn't recognize someone else's physical boundaries. And I'm by no means someone who is shy about hugging. I come from a family that hugs, most of my friends and I will hug as a greeting/departure gesture. But that does not mean I am available to be hugged by everyone and anyone just because they want to. It's usually not even a sexual thing, either. Some folks are just waaaayyyy too touchy-feely. They're not sensitive to what is comfortable for others, they push their own needs and impulses on whomever they wish. They can't see that they're being in any way invasive or rude. Then they have the nerve to get angry when you try to politely refuse that level of contact, because, um, you don't actually know (and in some cases like) them well enough to go there. Sure, in certain cultures hugging is an accepted greeting and it's done in a friendly, undemanding manner. That's no problem in my books. I even learned to master the Dutch custom of three kisses on alternate cheeks (gotta one up the Italians and Spanish, don't cha know :D). But there is a limit. If you go to hug someone because it's customary in the situation you're in, and that person tells you they're not into it, why in the world would you insist on doing it anyway?
