Until the next whipping boy comes along. We've already done Fieldy and Mark Hoppus. You'd think everyone would be tired of this ridiculous argument by now. Let's see...
- Band is popular with the kids.
- Bassist is a fan favorite, and a bass company introduces a signature model of said bassist.
- TalkBass erupts in outrage that a non-virtuoso bassist is given a signature model, bashing the instrument and its namesake.
- TalkBass wonders why the kids just can't listen to what TalkBass thinks is good to listen to, since reviled popular bassist du jour is so clearly awful.
- The TalkBass Snob Resistance arrives, pointing out that:
[*]Dude in question is a rock star, and rock stars move more basses than jazzbos.
[*]Most of us had a rock star to look up to as teens, and we all know the difference now between Jaco Pastorius and Yucko the Clown because that first rock star inspired us to pick up the instrument.
[*]Dude in question isn't all that bad, truth be told. He plays in key and in time, and that's close enough for rock and roll.
[*]Seriously, what's with you people? You're like Ernest Borgnine in "BASEketball". "You kids today with your Pac-Man video games and Dan Fogelberg records…" Do you yell at teenagers to get off your lawn, too?
[*]Don't like the bassist? Don't like the bass? Then don't buy his records/sig bass. Quit yer bitchin'.
Musicianship isn't some elite club that requires a good-taste test. Anything, and I mean
ANYTHING that inspires
ANYONE to make music is good. Period. End of line.
And a big "right on!" to all the Kip Winger defenders. I've met the guy. Super-nice and sick talented. I defy anyone to try and convince me otherwise.
