I don't mind Pete Wentz.

Fall Out Boy are making and playing music and by the looks of things enjoying themselves - good on them!

Does it matter how good they are at their instruments? A lot of folk get enjoyment from what they do - does it really matter that those folk are all under 16? I'm sure Bass Player sold a shed more mags that month than they would have with, say Victor Wooden on the cover and business is business.

I say good luck to Wenz and Co as I would to any other kids in bands out there trying to make it whether they're playing fusion, pop, rock, thrash or emo, etc, etc.!

I don't understand people bashing his skills. Sure he plays some easy stuff but their songs have a catchyness to them which is often hard to write if you ask me. I play in two bands, one pop rock and the other more sludgy Post rock and especially with the pop rock band we tend to be a bit catchy but it ain't easy.

I'm just saying; it's not because he plays rootnotes and simple lines that he isn't a good musician. If the rootnotes do the trick, well ok than.

Having said that, i also dislike the whole emo-kids. They all look the same and make the same silly faces, but hey they're young kids who want to be part of something. It will all pass as they get older.

He is in no way shape or form a good vocalist

He runs out of breath every 2 two words.

If you've seen them live and weren't impressed - you must have caught him on a bad night.

Pete isn't a bass player as far as I'm concerned. He's just holding the instrument trying to look 'cool'

He plays a bass - whether you like it or not, he's a bass player.

It was Invalid Link Removed, not "Bass Player" that had the pleasure of putting Mr. Wentz on their cover...

They ceased publication two months later, so I highly doubt there was a huge "Pete Wentz"-inspired spike in sales. ;)

I'm going to have to go with You on this mirage.

Has everyone forgotten what its like to be a teen? How easily influenced you are? Not to know whats up and down? These kids like this music because they are exposed to it, and its 'the norm'. It IS a catalyst for some kids out there that really have thier heart in music, regardless of how concerned about fashion they are OR being 'In'.

I grew up on a hoard of punk-rock bands (once again, FOB is not really punk-rock, but I am using this comparison), and even though many of those bands I Liked had really crappy musicians in them, It took me into a deeper world of music and I progressed. Now, I'm not saying that every kid that Peter Wentz or any equivalent He might have in modern 'trendy' music inspires is Going to go the same route I did, but its still a definate possibility.

I don't really care for FOB, and just like many of you I don't like Wentz's playing that much. I just think that Mirage has a real point here when You think about it. Lets face it... how many teens are going to go out and buy a friggin motown album? Or a recording with wooten on it? Come on, lets be reasonable! They like this newer poppy comercialized stuff, and since that's what they're being exposed to, Its the gateway for THEM despite the quality of music it may be.

We're not born with a list of "awesome" players in our heads that we should automatically know and listen too. We learn that from those that mentor us, or sometimes on our own.

I think We all need to be a little more supportive of the younger generation of Bassists, because without our support they may just be Wentz clones, but WITH us they could be so much More.

Sorry Ian Perge - I get (I should say got!)both and I am easily confused!

Yeah GW Bass Guitar is out of print but I still bet they sold a few more mags that month, although by the look of things as you say it wasn't enough!

Now who is going to be the first to say their cessation of publishing was due to having Peter Wentz on the cover?!!:D

Pete Wentz sells the image - he happens to play bass also.

Patrick Stumpe is an amazing vocalist who makes the musical part happen.

Couldn't tell you if he's an amazing vocalist or not...the few songs I've heard from them I couldn't understand a damn thing. Maybe I'm just getting old. :D Timbre wasn't bad, but sounded a bit cliche to me. But the enunciation left a lot to be desired...

I do think it's a bit silly for Wentz to have a signature bass, usually that's an honor that IMHO should be reserved for those bassists who set a standard for the art form, like Jaco or Geddy or Duck or Jamerson, etc. OTOH if it gets an "emo kiddie" into playing the bass, then we can reel 'em in. Any gateway drug is a good gateway drug as far as getting kids into music is concerned...they could be getting into a lot worse.

I am disgusted with his bass playing. I also dislike Fall Out Boy. When I heard their cover of Joy Division's "Love Will Tear us Apart", a took the cd out of the player and threw it out of the moving car. My friend (who owned the cd) wasn't very happy with this. However, this Pete fellow writes marketable POP music and makes more money then I can in three years.

Why does it matter what one was doing at that age?

I would be interested in whether he not you was a "professional" or not.

Stevie Ray Vaughan didn't read music or really know chording either, but he did know the fretboard.
So? We are not talking about SRV, you just supported my point.

It is possible to make millions at a trade but not be a professional at it. My father-in-law trades stocks and makes a nice chunk of change, but he's not a professional.

Is your father-in-law on the cover of Stock Trader magazine?
Pete Wentz was on the cover of Bass Player magazine and music is his chosen profession so yes he is a "professional".
;)

I'm sure very very few, if any, of the bassists discussed here care what we think of them, positively or negatively. Does that mean the whole Bassists forum should be shut down?

No, but does that give us the right to bash every player who plays music that is not to our liking or whether we find them credible or not? It is supposed to be a support community. Read the rules.;)
