I don't mind Pete Wentz.

you obviously know very little about Kip Winger...your statement is absurd. Pull up Kip's resume and look at the people he's worked with, written for, produced, and toured with. Kip got bashed because he was a pretty boy, but behind his looks was also one talented cat...some of the string arrangements Kip's done on other artists work is fantastic...

next time you want to through out a completely assinie comment like that...do your homework...

+1

Reb Beach, Rod Morganstein, and Kip were all good players even if their band was not well received

man i bought that issue of Bass Guitar with Wentz on the cover. i didn't know who he was, but i would think if you are gracing the cover of a major music publication aimed at musicians, then you must be somebody worth checking out... (i give evryone a chance) Wentz admitted they weren't the tightest band live"and the interviewer's responce was " i noticed the music gets away from you" Wentz also said " i'm a professional musician and there is so much that i don't know"...so natrually i wanted to hear FOB's music, hopeing that he could redeem himself. man!! it was that same suburban mtv straight out the sub-division teeny bullsheet that they try to pass off as punk or whatever the f--k emo is..come on' man!! these dudes are in there mid to late 20's and that mess sounds like they went into the studio with fruit roll-ups and juice boxes, and all sorts of gay snacks..am i jealous? you damn right!! music is hard man, and i've been breakin my ass for years to function competently and creatively within the confines of any rhythm section, and it seems not to mean sh-t anymore to rock kids, hip hop kids etc..Wentz and FOB's success sends the wrong message...i would never take the stage or walk in anyone's session without having my sh-t together..i'm very sensitive to scuitny it would hurt me deep if people felt that i didn't know how to play...i would never piss on the art form by coming into the game cocky and chopless..and for the last 25 years the prevailing attitude is..I DON'T GIVE A F--K WHERE'S THE CHECK!! and we all have to suffer and endure that bullsh-t.. i want to like your music, i to want beleive your band is cool, thats why we tune in. the talent is sooo questionable nowadays in popular music.. i came up under a higher standard if you couldn't sing or play then you couldn't join a band let alone get a deal...and now FOB has there own signature line of instruments..there is no justification for that...we have become a sad society..

p.s Kip Winger was good man.. he was just a victim of the time.....

Great post man! :)

I don't hate Pete Wentz but how you play bass sort of reflects how you are as a human being which actually says alot about the guy.

As has already been said, Pete writes the lyrics and that's his primary function in the band. However he can't sing well, so he can't express himself that way. So why not pick up the bass just to share the glory of performing his songs onstage? He definitely puts hard work into his lyric writing. His priorities aren't the same as ours, since we're bass players first...

PS. I think the Fall Out Boy bashing is on par with Nirvana bashing. Kurt wasn't a good guitarist, the lyrics sucked, they inspired a bunch of kids to start crappy garage bands... Although I'd personally rather listen to Nirvana. :D What kids like is what kids like. You could go on and on about what makes a good band/musician, and all the hard work, and it won't change a thing because FOB is marketable to tweens. I'm not praising or encouraging bands like them in particular, but what sells is what sells.

Of course, music as an art is in a sorry state when things like this happen. Complaining about it won't help.

Anyone who is as popular as Pete Wentz has done something right. Crazy technique may not be in the music - but not all music calls for crazy bass lines. These guys write good, catchy music (as I've said in other threads) that focuses on lyrics and simple identification with regular non-musicians. Stop hating because these guys don't record the most complex timings or schemes - that's not even the hard part, the hard part is bringing it all together into something that people like.

fall out boy is pretty bad live, pete wentz has one of the most crappy bass tone, provided u can hear it....but he looks cool tho, ill give him that

fall out boy has some pretty catchy songs tho i must admit...theyre fine to listen to when on recordings, live not so....

I agree. Stop the hating period, at least they went the route of playing instruments instead of being just another Boy Band. I can respect all types of music, even if I don't like it. I can understand bashing him if he boasted himself as great in the articles but he is not doing that in articles. Think about where you were at in your career at his age and if Talkbassers would've bashed you.

Well, he is enjoying some amount of fame and fortune, though apparently not a great deal of respect from the bass playing community.

My guess is it doesn't bother him too much.

There are a zillion guys with a zillion times the skill and ability as him, and nobody knows (or will ever know) who they are.

What's the big deal? Is the guy trying to style himself as a bass icon? He's in a band that is enjoying some success and he is filling a necessary role on stage.

You'd think a bunch of bass players would know by now that nobody cares about bass playing except bass players.

I think that's the point. They(he) can't even do the simple stuff yet he gets a signature bass. I wouldn't even give him a Wish endorsement.

I'm sure he probably thinks about us when he cashing his checks and banging all the 18 year old groupies. He is certainly bothered by the unapproval of some potbellied middle-aged semi pros from Talkbass. "I wonder if the guys on Talkbass would do her Doggystyle or Reverse Cowgirl?" :D
