I don't mind Pete Wentz.

I think that's what rubs bassplayers the wrong way about Wentz. Or at least it does for me. It seems that for him music is a means to an end and not an end unto itself. An article on the band stated that he isn't involved in writing the music, but only acting as a lyricist. He's Bernie Taupin using the bass as a prop to get himself onstage.

I don't see that as a major problem. The bass isn't the be-all and end-all for everyone. He does care about his craft- writing the lyrics. Somebody's gotta play the simple bass lines, why not somebody who's involved in writing their material? His bass playing doesn't hugely detract from the quality of their music which I personally am less than thrilled with.

There are two problems I have with this.

1. Pete Wentz is not playing to play. If you look at the overall picture, he's a show boy. He cares more about his looks and how he looks "playing" bass. It's really not about the music to him. So basically, there is definitely going to be a glut of bad bass players strumming the bass at the 18th fret just because it looks cool. Just like the players draggin' their arses on stage while playing because Fieldy does it.

2. Fall Out Boy is nowhere near punk.

Anyway, check out the latest issue of Blender.

BTW, I'm not hating on anyone's opinion and anyone can like anybody they want to, but I do think Wentz is a tool personally.

Edit: To OP, you need to put Pete Wentz on your influences under the all the Jaco, John Entwistle, Steve Harris, Billy Sheehan, etc. That wouldn't stick out like a sore thumb!

That's just my $.02

PLUS ONE!!!!! screw fall out boy and all new music today

If you think my opinion is less thought out and valid than your just because I'm 19, you're sorely mistaken. Maybe the general population was misinformed in "your day" but times have changed DRASTICALLY. I know for a fact that Kip Winger is a capable bass player. I know he played for Alice Cooper, as well as many other credible artists. However, he was part of the image driven hairband scene, his band (Winger) is absolutely horrible flavour of the week garbage, and he posed for Playgirl for Christ's sake. In my opinion, he could be the greatest bass player of all time (which he most certainly is not) but he's still a tool. Not to mention the fact that most people don't even remember him or who he was. So, old guys, I appreciate you not wanting to hurt my feelings, but I'm an adult, I can take it.

Your age has nothing to do with your opinion. It does however have a lot to do with experience.

First of all, I agree that there are people in the world who would better fit a comparison with Pete Wentz. However, I did not compare him to Kip Winger, someone else did. I merely stated that he was a tool, a fact which I find to be undeniable. While on topic, the comparison I make between the two is the low standard that they set for popular music. The band (Winger) is terrible, the band (Fall Out Boy) is terrible. Both of these individuals contribute to the product of these two bands, and in my opinion, severely underestimate the intelligence of their audience (a disapointment considering the high number of records they sell) All I'm saying is that for all we know, they could both play Classical Thump backwards note for note while doing their Nancy-boy spins blindfolded in a windstorm, none of us will ever know, but the fact remains that the trash that they feed the public is sub-par crap, and that's my complaint with the two of them.

+100000. The fault ultimately falls on the masses who buy this crap and fuel the teeny-bop music industry. It's all about the quick buck anymore with a few jewels in the rough.

this has gone on long enough...we agree to disagree about Kip Winger...let's move back to bashing Wentz...lol

I'm a fan of Kip's by the way, and have a good friend thats worked with Kip...he's brilliant in the studio...

I like some of fall out boy tbh, but thats just me. The basslines are simple, true but there fun to play when your just chilling. Plus! Key thing to remember... simple gets remembered! Whether or not hes any good at bass i wont judge (he hits the right notes anyway) and tbh i dont see how anyone else can judge any other bassist either. Who knows... imho myung is great at bass but the only person that can judge that is myung (and hes a quiet guy so we prob wont find out).

Well ill shut up and hide :D :hiding:

I always get annoyed when people start bashing punk bassists.

You're already talking like a punk apologist. Stop apologizing. As Mike Watt says, "punk = freedom". OK, I don't have an exact quote for that, but I'm sure he'd endorse the thought.

Punk (at it's best) is the "none of the above" music genre. Other styles of music (think Country or Metal) are more about "but is it really [fill in genre]?" It's punk because you say it's punk. The Talking Heads were punk, but they had little in common with Black Flag.

So these young people who don't fit in wherever they are and associate themselves with punk. Great! It worked for me! From there you can appreciate free jazz, world music, hardcore metal, whatever.

Someone (whom I've never heard of or knowingly heard) is giving an aspiring artist a virtual home and exposing them to the joys of musicianship? Bless him!

KO

I've only heard two Fall Out Boy songs, the ones that Celinder's band plays. I like 'em both, I've always been a sucker for power pop. I also think the Knack crafted some pretty good pop songs.

I also like Winger, especially the stuff released after Beavis & Butthead did them in. Pull is a very rockin' heavy metal album.

What's my point? I appreciate both bands for what they are. If you don't like, don't listen. Simple enough.

Who wants to talk some smack about Jane's Addiction? The most annoying vocals ever..........

i love all styles of music but i dislike suck style Which Pete Wentz plays i think he need's to sit in his room for awhile and think about what he's done so basically I don't hate Pete Wentz but how you play bass sort of reflects how you are as a human being which actually says alot about the guy. On a last not i don't think he deserves a signature bass and I rest my point.

I'll admit I also like FOB. I seem to get the impression that he is only a target for hate simply because he is in a popular mainstream band. I get this hate when I say I like Peter Hook's playing- he is a 'mainstream' bassist who plays good simple lines. It was a 'simple' bassline which encouraged me to play bass, in the form of New Order's Blue Monday.

Ya but that's different Peter Hook can actually play even though it's simple you can tell he knows some stuff, he's not just thumping away root notes. I got inspired by simple lines too, "Money" "Another Brick In the Wall" and "Jumpin Jack Flash" were the some of those lines

A despise wentz a lot (he doesn't even write the lyrics?!!!!), I just do it's his overall cocky attitude and mere lack of bass playing, even if he is a "gateway" bass player most of the kids will probably get their parents to buy them that bass because they see him playing it. They'll probably learn basic technique get some tab for FOB and other pop punk then play the simple bass lines and that's all they'll be interested in. They probably won't learn anything more complex because everything else is not in their music realm or too hard, then they get bored of it and the bass stays in the closet for the next 20 years. This is generally speaking of course there will be some kids who will want to expand their realm and take up more theory and technique.
