I don't mind Pete Wentz.

man i bought that issue of Bass Guitar with Wentz on the cover. i didn't know who he was, but i would think if you are gracing the cover of a major music publication aimed at musicians, then you must be somebody worth checking out... (i give evryone a chance) Wentz admitted they weren't the tightest band live"and the interviewer's responce was " i noticed the music gets away from you" Wentz also said " i'm a professional musician and there is so much that i don't know"...so natrually i wanted to hear FOB's music, hopeing that he could redeem himself. man!! it was that same suburban mtv straight out the sub-division teeny bullsheet that they try to pass off as punk or whatever the f--k emo is..come on' man!! these dudes are in there mid to late 20's and that mess sounds like they went into the studio with fruit roll-ups and juice boxes, and all sorts of gay snacks..am i jealous? you damn right!! music is hard man, and i've been breakin my ass for years to function competently and creatively within the confines of any rhythm section, and it seems not to mean sh-t anymore to rock kids, hip hop kids etc..Wentz and FOB's success sends the wrong message...i would never take the stage or walk in anyone's session without having my sh-t together..i'm very sensitive to scuitny it would hurt me deep if people felt that i didn't know how to play...i would never piss on the art form by coming into the game cocky and chopless..and for the last 25 years the prevailing attitude is..I DON'T GIVE A F--K WHERE'S THE CHECK!! and we all have to suffer and endure that bullsh-t.. i want to like your music, i to want beleive your band is cool, thats why we tune in. the talent is sooo questionable nowadays in popular music.. i came up under a higher standard if you couldn't sing or play then you couldn't join a band let alone get a deal...and now FOB has there own signature line of instruments..there is no justification for that...we have become a sad society..

p.s Kip Winger was good man.. he was just a victim of the time.....
Wow! I dunno, using Fall Out Boy to bash the vast majority of bands that got popular in the past 25 years seems like a heck of stretch to me.:hmm:

If you don't like it, change the channel or station instead of writing 6 pages about it. Before he made the cover of BP I didn't even know who he was because everytime one of his songs came on the radio I changed the station.I don't like him or his band but I've got better things to do than bash them.

There are two problems I have with this.

1. Pete Wentz is not playing to play. If you look at the overall picture, he's a show boy. He cares more about his looks and how he looks "playing" bass. It's really not about the music to him. So basically, there is definitely going to be a glut of bad bass players strumming the bass at the 18th fret just because it looks cool. Just like the players draggin' their arses on stage while playing because Fieldy does it.

2. Fall Out Boy is nowhere near punk.

Anyway, check out the latest issue of Blender.

BTW, I'm not hating on anyone's opinion and anyone can like anybody they want to, but I do think Wentz is a tool personally.

Edit: To OP, you need to put Pete Wentz on your influences under the all the Jaco, John Entwistle, Steve Harris, Billy Sheehan, etc. That wouldn't stick out like a sore thumb!

That's just my $.02

You are ao right. Pete Wentz does indeed suck!!!!!!!

What he said was "I want to learn the fretboard. I'm a professional musician, but there's so much I don't know."

Now, I don't know of many guys who would openly admit if they couldn't play thier instrument well, especially if they were in one of the biggest bands in the world.

And he's fooled a lot of people into what? Fall Out Boy invented Fall Out Boy. They are not just some coporate band. Wentz has a history on the Chicago hardcore scene, and the rest of the band have similar stories as well.

It's just always so funny to me that people get upset when a bass player (or any musician for that matter) in a popular band doesn't show the technical prowess of the artists they like to listen to. Here's an idea: instead of posting in threads bad-mouthing someone on the internet, go listen to
your favorite records. Go do something productive with your time.

Or not. =P

Fall-Out Bay, and darling Pete, are sellouts. It is fine if you are part of the hardcore scene, and anti-establishment. But once you have made up your mind to be a sell out, please don't be on the cover of a reputable magazine and say you're a professional, but don't know the fret-board.

I suck as a player, but at least I know the fret board.

Fall Out Boy are corporate, packaged to teen aged girls, and out to make millions. The music is secondary and it is awful.

It's basically the 90's boy band revival, only with them looking like they can play their instruments

The whole dressing emo craze always dies out as kids get older. Girls listen to Wentz music and borderline gay dudes. I dont mean to offend anyone if your gay and reading this. ALl the emo girls and guys look almost identical. I can never tell which is which sometimes. There all so scrawny and DUMB. They talk the same and dress the same. Its like someone put a trance over them to be stupid. Thats just my 2 cents cuz i bet a majority of you dont know what its liek to go to school with these kids who look up to wentz.

hahahaha..... That is so true

What were you doing at his age? Were you professional? Did you or do you now make a living playing bass?

I suck as a player, but at least I know the fret board.
I know a guitarist who can get up and hold his own with players and bands from blues to jazz , but doesn't know the fretboard at all. He plays strictly by ear and has no idea what key he is in until you tell him.

Fall Out Boy are corporate, packaged to teen aged girls, and out to make millions.

You say they are corperate and make millions, but aren't professional. Make up your mind.

at his age I was playing Bass in a punk rock band... (late seventies... real punk in England, not that New York scene arty punk stuff...) I didn't know what I was doing either... just played hard, fast, root notes, and tried my best to keep up with the drummer and to remember the chord changes

here I am now age fifty getting to grips with Jazz basslines and all the technical stuff required to do a good two feel or four feel bass line and trying to swing it as well...

There's plenty of hope for Pete Wentz... he might actually learn the technicalities behind the music and get to grips with more challenging stuff...

What were you doing at his age? Were you professional? Did you or do you now make a living playing bass?

Why does it matter what one was doing at that age?

I know a guitarist who can get up and hold his own with players and bands from blues to jazz , but doesn't know the fretboard at all. He plays strictly by ear and has no idea what key he is in until you tell him.

Stevie Ray Vaughan didn't read music or really know chording either, but he did know the fretboard.

You say they are corperate and make millions, but aren't professional. Make up your mind.

It is possible to make millions at a trade but not be a professional at it. My father-in-law trades stocks and makes a nice chunk of change, but he's not a professional.

I'm sure he probably thinks about us when he cashing his checks and banging all the 18 year old groupies. He is certainly bothered by the unapproval of some potbellied middle-aged semi pros from Talkbass. "I wonder if the guys on Talkbass would do her Doggystyle or Reverse Cowgirl?" :D
I'm sure very very few, if any, of the bassists discussed here care what we think of them, positively or negatively. Does that mean the whole Bassists forum should be shut down?

I don't have a problem with this kid, although I hate the whole "EMO" thing. I swear to God I feel like yanking on that tuft of hair hanging in his eyes everytime I see him. I also dislike Bass Guitar Magazines' subtitle for his article,"the most famous bass player in the world". I never heard of him until I read that article. He sounds alot more together than I expected; I thought he sounded like an intelligent guy.

I have never made a living exclusively by playing bass. Like I said before, I suck. I also have never been a teeni bop poser.

I know a guitarist who can get up and hold his own with players and bands from blues to jazz , but doesn't know the fretboard at all. He plays strictly by ear and has no idea what key he is in until you tell him.

Good for him! Cheers!

You say they are corperate and make millions, but aren't professional. Make up your mind.

You are right, he is professional by definition. Maybe I should of used another word that implies the fact that he can't play and is a poser. See ya in the next Pepsi commercial Pete.
