All I'm going to say is that I highly doubt Pete Wentz could get a sideman gig backing one of the most influential artists to come out of the '70s (Alice Cooper), be a first-call session bassist in NYC, start what was most likely the most technically skilled band of the "hair metal" (Reb Beach? Rod Morgenstein of The Dregs?!?) and generally be a talented "Jack of All Trades" (fretted and fretless bass, electric, acoustic, and classical guitar, keyboards, songwriting and arranging). I knew Kip Winger, and Pete Wentz is no Kip Winger! ;)

As for Wentz, his skill as a bassist is only rivaled by his skill at overdosing on Ativan... which is to say, he has an extremely hard time succeeding at either. :rollno: :hmm:

I don't think it's anything new for a band to "Make it big" based on nothing more than being at the right place at the right time. There are so many amazing musicians none of us will ever hear due to them not being. Thats just the difference in being a musician and being a star. Not being famous doesn't make you any less a musician, and being famous doesn't make you more of one. I guess I kinda think it's two different things. Most people in the world are not musicians and can't really appreciate the talent some players have. They just want to hear something thats catchy. Which, I guess is why so many of us players are so tortured by some of the crap on the radio. But then again, if somebody wanted to pay me big bucks to thump along with three chord songs I'd do it in a heartbeat.

i dont know..in my opinion i think poseur rock breeds poseur rock. part of it is because so many are directly influenced by mediocre players..another part of it is good looks, fame and fortune will always supercede over style and substance.. thats how it has always been in this country(usa)..and as far as Wentz goes, more power to him.. rock in general and especially punk over the last 30 something years has had a come as you are aesthetic.. chops being optional. Iggy Pop, the Ramones, Sex Pistols. (i can name more) sucked as musicians..Wentz is still young, he has time to become better..but by then Fall Out Boy won't exist..so be not mad at Wentz, be mad at the american mindset that rock created...Wentz is just taking advantage of that mindset just like the long list of famous mediocre players that came years before him..

Agh! Just because you don't like it, that doesn't mean it sucks. I don't enjoy country music, does that mean I can trash talk every country act just because I don't like them? "It's all the same! Nobody's being original! Country music is going down the drain!" (example, not my thoughts).

You just don't like them because they're playing for sold-out crowds and making tons of money. If you were in his shoes, how would you feel?

Oh my god, even talking about that subject is stupid. Everytime a band's music catches on and they get signed people from everyehere start bashing them for no reason. Fallout boy is not a prefabricated band it is a reality. Even if that kind of pop is not my thing I remeber hearing songs from them no and then a few years ago. They are a true band just like a lot of others, the played live a lot toured a lot all Diy then a major label saw a marketable product and exploited it just like every other major mainstream bands. I mean, the band worked so suddenly everyone in it have to be perfect, and be the greatest musicians.

I'm writing this and I don't even have a sigle fallout boy cd. it just makes me sick when kids start to diss a band just because they are popular and play a style of music they don't like.

What if Fallout boy was still a small band and you knew the guys in the band personnaly, would you still diss them that way. It is a known fact that the best music does not play on the radio or TV. Mainstream music is made to please everybody from the 7 year old little girl to a 77 year old guy.

Fallout boy is just a mainstream pop rock band and they are good at what they do, They have the looks to please teens and play catchy music.

It ends there. If you want to hear great musicians go out and buy a jazz cd instead of wasting your time criticising what you hear on Mtv

Wow, a bass player who can't play (I'd be surprised if he played on their disc- a lot of "ghost playing" happens with bands like this)....anyway, a bass player who can't play banging a singer who can't sing.

I agree, I mean, sure he's inspiring people, but like any "pop" artist, they're showing that an instrument isn't really a form of art, ist just something to use to look good/backup vocals, he's basically saying, you don't need to know anything, as long as you look cool, and that's a bad statement, because, when I heard john Entwistle for the first time, when I heard Jaco for the first time, I thought, I want to pick up a bass, spend hours a day learning and practicing and when I get good enough, I'll be able to be in a band, and make others feel the same, it inspired me to change my lifestyle, instead Pete Wentz is just making kids get a cheap bass and play for two weeks and then start a pop/punk band for a month.

I reckon one of the very first posts had it sorted and coined the phrase 'gateway bass player'.

I dont like the band or the music, and I dont think he's a good bass player - but we do need these 'gateway bass players' for the young 'uns - for me it was "Wow... I wanna be able to play that" and these days it seems to be "Wow...I wanna look like him and do it the way he does".

It makes me a little sad actually...

you obviously know very little about Kip Winger...your statement is absurd. Pull up Kip's resume and look at the people he's worked with, written for, produced, and toured with. Kip got bashed because he was a pretty boy, but behind his looks was also one talented cat...some of the string arrangements Kip's done on other artists work is fantastic...

next time you want to through out a completely assinie comment like that...do your homework...
