I doubt there are many people that enjoyed death metal without working up from more radio compatible versions of rock, hardrock, heavy metal and thrash metal.
I know a lot of metal heads that dig bands with cookie monster vocals, but these people started out with bands like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, KISS, Motörhead and so on - as did I.

The same goes for jazz, BTW. You can't just jump in at free jazz or 12 tone stuff without working your way up through more listener friendly subgenres.

I'm in the same boat as the OP: I can appreciate some of the technical aspects of this genre, but I never listen to it "recreatively" - not my cup of tea. The commitment level of some of these musicians is nothing short of impressive, though.

I don't know why it's surprising to many people that metal bands would have talented players. Even though I don't eat seafood I respect the sushi chef's abilities.

The Faceless is far from representative of all metal. No one is. Metal is too diverse and flexible to be exemplified by one band.
The Faceless are a little wanky, but talented musicians. People complain about the vocals, but what sort of vocals would sound right over something that aggressive? This is music to hit people to; if that isn't your thing it won't apply to you. There are literally thousands of other metal bands out there.

I used to not "get" decaf coffee, but then I stopped consuming caffeine for a point in my life. It's just as refreshing in the morning as regular coffee.

I'm into metal myself. Mostly power or symphonic metal. There's a few death and trash metal bands I like but not many. Revocation is one of the best metal bands in the past decade.

There is nothing wrong with not "liking" or "getting" a band, a musician, a song, a genre, whatever (sorry @mellowinman). It's called opinions, and that's exactly WHY we have choices.

I hate cilantro - that doesn't mean it's not a valid spice, or that others love it.
